Are these perennials and when do I plant them?

I am in Louisiana zone 8. I am trying to grow from seed this year and add some new plants to my garden. Are these perennials and do I plant them in January (wintersowing) or in April (after there is not chance of frost)?

sweet william dianthus,

gaillardia/blanket flower different types,

foxglove,

gloriosa daisy,

vinca,

pink and purple coneflowers, and

plains coreopsis tinctoria ?

Appreciate any advice on these plants.

Most are perennials, but a few are biennials (see below). The latter will produce foliage in the garden this year, and flower next year.

sweet william dianthus, BIENNIAL
gaillardia/blanket flower different types, PERENNIAL (short-lived)
foxglove, BIENNIAL
gloriosa daisy, BIENNIAL (but may self-sow)
vinca, PERENNIAL
pink and purple coneflowers, and PERENNIAL
plains coreopsis tinctoria ? PERENNIAL

I'm not too sure how you will be germinating them and/or what your weather is like between now and April, but if you can harden them off a little, you can plant them into your garden before the last frost date. They should not be as frost-senstive as a Tomato for example.

Natalie, Oriental Lilies are completely hardy in your area. They can be planted in the ground any time if the soil is not frosen. You can plant them in pots of course, but you will need large and deep (at least 12" deep) pots. Do not keep them in the house at room temperature!!! They are not indoor plants and they do not need a head start like some tender plants. If your beds are ready, go ahead and plant them now! You will need excellent drainage and protection from hot afternoon sun in your area. Toss a little bit of bone meal into the hole. Plant them at least 6" deep. And in any case do not store them: Lilies do not go dormant like other bulbs. Storing makes them dehydrated and weak. Alina.

Remember when you planted them in your garden you shocked them and they will need at least 3 years to acclimate themselves. You could get a soil test to make sure the soil has the nutrients your plants need for optimum growth, and make sure they get at least 1" of water per week. Otherwise you'll just have to be patient. I purchased many perennials, shrubs & trees over the past 4 years for our 2 acre property and this is the first year many bloomed like they should.

Perennials may be planted as soon as you get them. However, if you are very busy, when you get around to it! If you do not plant right away, make sure the plants are will watered.

The borderline temperature for tomato ripening and quality is about 45 degrees. Once the temperature goes below this you should have already harvested or taken the plant inside. It is similar to putting fresh tomatoes in the refrigerator, the cold ruins the texture. Take everything inside; temperatures will continue to drop and more rain is likely--rain hastens splitting of non-green tomatoes. Under ideal October conditions (maybe once every ten years), tomatoes can be left outside until late October, but this year the month has been on the cool side. Our tomatoes were brought in shortly after Labor Day, and we are down to the last half-dozen to eat.

My dianthus have already sprouted. Even with morning temperatures in the low 20s, they're doing fine. The coneflowers are doing fine too. I still have plains coreopsis alive in the garden from last year. I thought it was an annual. I would think it should be fine too, as long as it's protected from a really hard freeze and direct frost. Just don't take the tops off the containers until you have to due to temperatures.

We are suppose to have cold weather here in central LA next week meaning it will get in to the 30's, but who knows if that will last very long. It was mid 70's today. So am thinking if I don't get everything wintersowed in milkjugs in the next couple of weeks I may have to chill the seeds before planting them in late February or early March. Do you chill the seeds in the refrigerator or the freezer? What kind of container do you chill them in? Do seeds run the risk of growing moldy while in the cold frig or freezer as I don't want that to happen? And how long is a good length of time to have them chilling, 1 week, 2 weeks??

Dianthus is a cool season flower in Louisiana. Best to get it in the ground now.
