Help-Mock Orange accident

Hi Forum

My mother just called in tears and said her handi-man just pruned her 8 foot tall 25 year old mock oranges to a foot tall. Will they die, what can we do to salvage these beautiful old fragrant shrubs?

They will be fine. Probably even do them some good in the long term. Ideally they would have been regularly pruned in sections for rejuvenation but a radical haircut will not hurt them.

But one has to question what sort of a 'handyman' it is who cuts down people's shrubs without discussion and doesn't know how to look after a very common species.

Google 'rejuvenation pruning' to find out how they should be maintained in future.

sounds perfect.. but for the loss of this years bloom ...

these are 'run it over with the truck' shrubs.. they will regrow.. WITH VIGOR ...

unfortunately.. it should have been done .. just after flowering ...

are we sure on the ID .. 25 feet on a philadelphius ??? i can believe 25 feet wide.. but that tall????

How much sun does it get? And when? Has it become shaded in recent years? It has obviously been a healthily growing shrub, so have you noticed a decrease in growth and flowering over the last couple of years? You said that some of the older branches are starting to leaf out, so if it were me, I'd just wait a couple of weeks until I saw no more new growth, and then cut off and out what is dead and see what I had left. The only time I saw a mock orange dwindle away was when surrounding trees grew over it and left it in deep shade.

I may put a sign on the gate asking people to enter at the front...that may send a subtle "keep out" message. Or "Beware of Dog" but I would have to follow up by getting a dog. I can tell you something from my own "bad neighbor" experience: SUBTLE DOESN'T WORK - EVER. My next door "neighbor" used to let her dog come into my fenced in yard to poop. So I put a lock on the gate she was entering thinking "that will send a message to keep out". So she went to the gate at the back of my yard! AGAIN, when you're dealing with BAD NEIGHBORS, SUBTLE DOESN'T WORK. I now have locks on all 3 of my gates. And I told her to keep her dog out of my yard if I ever forget to lock a gate. I said it nicely but I was very, very clear.

I had Mexican Mock orange in downtown Austin on the cut bank of the Colorado river so we had a lot of clay and river rubble that had been worked for one hundred years so the ground was very fertile. It was in shade till afternoon. I didn't do a lot of watering and it was fragrant. It had a loose arching informal habit in the part shade of a live oak tree. I liked it. I aso had other mock oranges. There is a Canyon and a Texas mock orange t. Shiny dark leaves and very nice. The Texas Mock Orange is more drought resistant (Philadelpius texensis). Cutting a plant back always delays upward progress. It's simple physics: you take part of it away, now it is smaller. The basis for the myth of cutting back causing invigoration (and more rapid size increase) in well established shrubs and trees rushing to replace lost existing top size with comparatively non-branching shoots ("suckers") when hard pruned. The reality is specimens so treated actually end up smaller overall at the same point in time than they would have been if not whacked back. The purpose of shearing a still-developing hedge is to make it fill in, and not to make it grow taller faster. A Tobira in Seattle (USDA 8) was over 21 ft. tall in ~2005.

Though I recommend rejuvenation pruning on a regular basis, I would never do so for such a mature specimen.

The older the plant is, the more difficult it is to recover from a rejuvenation pruning. It 's stressful enough for a vigorous, young plant. I would give this plant no guarantee, but hope for the best.
Just as we measly humans find it more difficult to recover from a traumatic injury as we age...so do plants (and other living things) .

I hope that she makes it crystal clear to the handy man that she is terribly upset. She should also make it perfectly understood that the pruning of ANYthing is not acceptible without specific instructions on a plant-per-plant basis.

ken - 8 feet tall, 25 years old.

rhizo - I reckon they'll recover even at that age. But my opinion may be coloured by the climate I garden in where shrubs do not have to contend with excessive heat and get ample natural moisture. I wouldn't necessarily recommend such radical treatment of older specimens but now it's done I don't think it will hurt them.

Even a very old Mock Orange can take that kind of severe pruning and bounce right back. No worries. Sorry about this year's flowers, though. :(

Granted, if it were like most other shrubs then a pruning that severe to a shrub that old would be cause for concern, but not a Mock Orange. They're tough as nails and like Ken said, it'll probably really appreciate it and bounce back, plus!

the key .. besides carefully reading the facts.. lol ...

is that it has a 25 year old root system.. and now.. 6 inch stubs.. thats a lot of energy potential .. and i would not be surprised if the thing isnt near 4 feet tall by fall ... and fill back in completely within 2 to 3 years ...

dont worry about the plant ...
