What Rose Should I Plant Near G. Nabbonand?

I am finishing up a bed that is sort of semi-oval in shape that has a mixed planting of roses in it. Reines des Violettes is in the center. Marechal Niel is on a huge trellis against the wall of a large building.

I was thinking a yellow, but that may be too dull? What I have in pots that might be suitable are Rosette Delizy, Soncy, Safrano, Mlle. Franziska Kruger, or even someone like Stanwell Perpetual, who is a white. I also have Clytemnestra. I am hoping for a bit of contrast, but in a nice way. It's tough, because most are not blooming, or are between bloom cycles.

Planted in the bed so far are Archduke Charles, Spice, Marie Daley, St. Davids, (those are in the outskirts) and of course Gilbert, Reines, and Marechal. As time goes on, I will add some herbs and native wildflowers.

If your suggestions include something suitable that I don't already have, or would be nicer than what I already have, that is fine, as I can always purchase one.

Sandy, I think it might be too dull.
You want some contrast, but not so much that you overshadow G. Nabonnand. His color is so delicate.

What do I have him near, let me think . . .
AH! He's right next to 'Sharon's Delight,' a white single that might be called a patio-size Sally Holmes.
I think Bridesmaid would be good next to him, or -- hmmmmm.

Y'know, I might go with Freddy Kruger.

Thanks Jeri. I was thinking either F. Kruger or Rosette Delizy. Rosette is ready to plant, but F. Kruger is a bit small yet, and probably needs some more time in a pot. What do you think? So far when Rosette blooms she has been a delicate yellow, but then quickly develops the pinkish tones around the edges. About the time the bloom is spent, it is fairly washed throughout with an apricotty type of pink, suffused with a dab of lilac pink.

This particular area of the bed faces the most viewed area, so it needs some color, but not a harsh contrast, because it also shows Reines des Violettes peeking from behind (who will eventually get as large as a small tree - it's grafted on fortuniana). I already have ST. Davids where he will peek out from behind G. Nabonnand on an outer edge with his pretty red singles. The red and the peach looked good together when they were blooming.

Yikes cecily! I acctually also have a silver maple in a pot (I rescued it from a friend who got it as a housewarming gift and wanted no part of it) and have left it in a huge conainer for the reasons you explain. I Never knew birches were so troublesome-they seem so innocent!!! Hmm..the other place I could stick it is in the front lawn and have a huge mulch bed around it. I actually hate lawn, so I' welcome any chance to rip some of it out. I 've also heard river birches are very messy. But they are so beautiful! My knockouts are the ONLY failproof thing in my yard, so i'll do whatever i can to keep themhappy, which means no tree. Beetle infestations, month long drought and water ban, hungry bunnies and deer...all have ravished my yard and reaked havock on my garden--even the "easy to grow" stuff. My knockouts haven't looked anything less than spectacular not for a singleday.

What other Perennials You have planted near your roses?

In Northern California, I have these perennials mixed in with my roses, penstemone, salvia, scabiosa, yarrow, blanket flowers burgundy, oranges & lemons, perennial geraniums Rozanne, Jolly Bee, and Brookside, verbascum, sidalcea party girl, sun loving foxgloves like excelsior and camelot, English lavender, sea lavender, veronica, creeping lobelia, Japanese iris, Chinese foxglove, and lots of campanula. With the salvia and penstemone you have to be careful to select smaller varieties. Many of the hardy geranium do not like full sun, I have found that Jolly Bee handles the sun better than most. My favorite scabiosa is giant blue, the flowers are Hugh and the butterflies love them. I am somewhat limited since I have such intense full sun, and limited space. Planting Roses Near Trees ?

There are no rules, and all references disagree, as is usual for any question regarding roses. Since you are in a warm zone, my actual experience in my garden may be of assistance - I have Madame Alfred Carriere (tea noisette) planted about 2 feet from the trunk of a large old plum tree. MAC has grown up the tree and also expanded horizontally - it is about 15 feet wide at the top, which is about 20 feet off the ground. Has been growing there happily for over 20 years. No care whatever. Blooms 10-12 months of the year. I planted 2 Fortune's Double Yellow roses about 12 inches away from the 4 ft wide trunk of a huge scarlet oak tree 3 years ago. To my astonishment, they have both grown 3-4 feet up the trunk so far, and bloom every Spring. Waiting to see... Here is a picture of Dawson's Apple Blossom, which as you can see is growing up our crabapple tree. It has been there for we estimate over 70 years. Its base is about 3 feet from the trunk (the crabapple trunk is hard to see in this pic - the enormous trunk you can see through the rose is actually the aforementioned oak tree. Also other roses are growing just as close to that tree. So, the answer is that I would try it - I would try some sort of climbing rose. I think they have DNA which allows for having less light at the beginning of their growing, because they are programmed to climb up to where there is more light.

Well I will be different however here is my idea. First I would enhance the dry river bed area...by bringing in fist sized river rock. You may need to put landscape fabric under the rock area to deter future weeding ;) next I would outline with edging the planting area with something to block plants from spreading into rock area. NEXT I would use all MEXICAN FEATHER GRASS in the planting area. It does not require water AND it blows softly with any breeze at all giving a softening effect and it is an xeriscape planting. This all will contrast nicely - the hard rocks with soft grasses and ULTRA low maintenance - also then I would make the backyard (inside the fence) LUSH with roses and ultra green plantings in a lush manner to contrast with the outside...I see you have rose arbors on the inside of the fence...plant for color and lush effect of roses over the top part of the fence...it will contrast even nicer with the outside...just my two cents. I do not have photoshop yet but used MS PAINT here is a diagram only...not really good but you will get the picture ;)

You get higher temps than I do, I bet. And when it is very hot here, Rosette is a softer blend of colors than I see when it's cool (our NORMAL weather).
So that would probably be a fine neighbor.

In my garden, so far, G Nabonnand's colors are soft enough that they don't clash with much of anything.

I think Jeri's right. It would be hard to find a rose that would clash much with G. Nabonnand ... he blends right in with most other plants. Understated elegance, you might say.

Oh, that's so good to hear. I went out and planted Rosette near Gilbert. I think they'll make fine companions. Thanks so much for the encouragement and the suggestions. I can't wait 'till they grow so I can see how pretty they are!
