Choosing a Buck rose
Comments (22)I live in Texas and love many of the Bucks mentioned - Quietness, Carefree Beauty, Earthsong, Prairie Breeze, Golden Unicorn, Folksinger, Pearlie Mae, Honeysweet [love the color on this one, unique!], Pipe Dreams, Square Dancer, Freckles, Countryman.....One I have not seen mentioned is Bright Melody. It is tall for me and blooms all the time with reddish blooms and is practically disease free. Sometimes I am regular with spraying, sometimes not.....this rose is always healthy. Also like Habanera, Malaguena......just pick some to try and see how they do. Chamblees has an excellent assortment. I am 2 hours from them and love to see their roses in bloom! Very healthy plants - reasonable prices....See MoreBest shrub roses for z5, near evergreen hedge?
Comments (3)Compact, as in small (2' or so h x w) clumps of roses similiar to the ones I mentioned in my post above. The Bucks do look very nice, but I probably have a better spot for them where they can spread out a bit more....See MoreName your work horses.
Comments (45)Our Lady of Guadalupe Johann Strauss The Fairy Pink Rosette- I have a long hedge of this and it never ever quits. It's just as good as Iceberg out here. Iceberg Gruss an Aachen Old Blush Grussie is probably the most outstanding rose when you consider the shape of the flowers and the bush shape. It takes some shade or the hottest sun. The runner up award goes to Francois Rabelais. I think its a splendid little bush and the shape of the red flowers are trememdous. Each spray is like a valentines bouquet. I would plant more of these if I had the room. And I am not usually partial to red roses except for Chrysler Imperial the Great....See MoreBest Shrubs? Nominations Please!
Comments (12)Shrubs are finally getting the attention they deserve. We are even going to have a Shrub Queen at our next rose show! I think we owe the Knockouts for bringing attention to a rose variety that many people ignored. Here's some of my goodies, and some that are not so good (yet). CHANTAL MERIEUX - I pooh-poohed it the first year and had to take it all back this year. It is really striking and a great grower. I will put a picture in with some others in the gallery next week sometime. WATERCOLORS - I was thrilled with the first bloom cycle, but haven't seen much since. It's going to have to bloom a lot more to stay, but I think it will next year. EDGAR DEGAS - This stripey is a blooming fool and another great one to photograph. JUBILEE CELEBRATION - Another one that took a year to be at it's best. Really a lovely and frequent bloomer this year. COMTESSE DE SEGUR - I'm still waiting. It may take another year for it to do something interesting. Now, the blooms are kinda boring. LADY OF THE MIST - This is a climber for me, and just gorgeous. But, it must be sprayed regularly. LADY ELSIE MAY - On the other hand, she never needs spraying. What a happy, healthy bloomer! MIDNIGHT BLUE -I keep it because of the great color -but the little blooms last for about a nano-second before turning very homely! CLAIRE ROSE - Guess I will shovel prune it, even if it is my granddaughter's name. Silly me, I expect a rose to bloom every now and then. That seems to be too much to expect for the Claire Rose! TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES - I have won several trophies with this one at the shows. It is very nice, but could bloom more. LEMON MERINGUE - This is a very vigorous climber, great blooms, great scent. CARAMELLA - One more year, and the clock is ticking! The flowers are gorgeous, but the plant grows like a jolly green giant - but with very funny looking foliage. BONITA RENAISSANCE - another jolly green giant, but hardly any flowers yet. The shovel pruning clock is ticking on this one, too. JULIETTE GRECO - Same for this one. I am so hoping to see more next year. CARE 200 - Same, again. But, this one may be getting too much shade. These will all get another year to develop. QUIETNESS - The star of my shrubs. What lovely, lovely blooms, and lots of them! Plus, the scent is divine! WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE 2000- lived up to its good reputation this year. Great color and great scent!...See Moredown_and_dirty
