Water Hyacinth and water level

My WH have taken over the pond (as expected). The center plants are at least two feet tall! And, yes, it's time to send many of them to that "great fish pond in the sky" also known as the compost heap at the end of the yard. But here's my question...

My mother pointed out that for WH plants to grow like that they must be using a lot of water. We had an incredibly rainy June and July but August (when the plants really took off) was fairly dry. Can WH actually cause the water level to go down?
