Natural pond edges?

I'm starting to plan a pond for our backyard. We live in the country and space is not an issue. We have some rather large boulders that were excavated when the house was built that I'd like to group around the edges. However I don't want to surround the whole pond with boulders. Obviously I'd need something to cover the liner. I'd like for it to look as natural as possible so I want to avoid the ring of rocks. Any suggestions? Pics would be greatly appreciated as well.

Also we have 3 rather large dogs, 2 of which will end up in the pond sooner or later. What's the best way to protect the liner?

Thanks
