Name That Plant!

Anyone recognize this flower?

I noticed this flower in the corner of my yard for the first time this year. It's growing amongst the ivy in the shade of a cedar. It's stem is about 1.5-2 ft long and I didn't see any leaves. I should note that it is growing in what appears to be an old garden site. Does anyone recognize this flower?

Commonly called Spider Lily...Lycoris radiata. Nice surprise, huh? :-)

Sue, there is a little clue in the 'robustissima'...robust. A robust and vigorous plant, that may overwhelm other plants when happy. There are lots of japanese anemone that would give a similar effect without being quite so spreading, but none that I know of that will necessarily stay in polite clumps, at least not in my climate...give them some room.

Thanks for the suggestion, Terry, but I've done some asking on other forums, and I'm pretty convinced that they're 'Mystery Day'. Same idea as 'Duet', but these are definitely purple, whereas 'Duet' is red. Both are very pretty. I'm hoping I'll be one of the lucky friends to get a piece of the tuber next year!! it a bulb ... if the flower is left to mature ... it may reseed ... it was supposed to disappear .. though mine are still there.. ratty looking and all ... you need to leave the leaves there as long as possible.. so they can feed the bulb for next year ... they are commonly planted in fall for spring bloom.. along with the crocus and tulips, etc ken

The pictures aren't great for ID, BUT... Compare the plant to Stachytarpheta sp. - Porterweed, Snakeweed, and many other common names. The flowers can vary in color from pink to mauve to deep purple.

Thanks, I think we must have replied at the same time. Yes, they are a very nice surprise. There has been a drought the whole time I've lived here, I guess that is why this is the first time I've been able to enjoy these lovely flowers. Such great stories surrounding these flowers. Very happy.
