When roses come out of dormancy in Zone 6

Hi all,

When do roses "officially" come out of dormancy in Zone 6? I need to get mine in pots for a move before they come out. However, there's still snow on the ground here (I'm in a small pocket of zone 6 within a state-wide zone 5) so I'm not too worried. However, when would a good time to do this be?

Hmmm, I would say between now and the next 2-3 weeks...mine all have buds swelling on them...ready to burst when the evening temps start staying above freezing.

Hmmm... mine don't have that... they suffered some unauthorized pruning by rabbits and deer (even with cages). Is that bad for them? This is their first winter and I'm hoping they will return!

It's being soaked in the ground now. :) Hopefully that will be okay. Apparently the plant wasn't happy about it though because it stabbed the tar out of my right thumb as I was planting it. I pulled the thorn out and it bled a lot, but since then (about 10 hours ago) my thumb has been really sore and a little swollen, like I'm having a reaction to it. These things aren't poisonous, are they? I've heard people eat roses sometimes. But gosh, my thumb hurts! And it's been all day. I'm not a weenie. I'm just perplexed about why this hasn't gone away. A little thorn-prick should swell up and still hurt half a day later. I've been stabbed by blackberry bushes scores or hundreds of times and I just go on my way without a worry or a complication. This is different.

Your zone (defined by the average lowest temps for the last 10 yesrs or so) does not matter. Your prevailing temps at this time and the expected temps for about a month after planting matter. Someone familiar with your local climate should be able to help. Also be wary of the seller's location because this would determine temp conditions while the roses are in transit. Also the ability to copiously water the plants (either naturally or through supplemental watering) for about 2 months after planting is an important consideration. IME, Knock Outs are extremely prone to canker issues. So they should not be mulched for the winter. If they accumulate trees leaves, try and get those out.

K s- thanks I think that's what I'll do. Since u got credit, I might as well leave them be and see if they produce and maybe I'll get a couple free rose trees out of it. I never knew about the antique rose nursery, I'll have to check them out at some point. The nursery down my block and the Wells Medina both carry rose standards but since I have a credit I rather save my money and buy from JP again, although I'm a little nervous about the same thing happening.

I can't speak to the critter damage, I'm sure others will chime in, I don't think it's great, but I'm sure they'll return.

Were the roses own root or grafted? How much cane is left? Serious bunny snacking can (unfortunately) kill a rose.

They are all own root and supposedly Michigan winter hardy. Some have very little cane left (3-4 inches) but the others have 9-12+ inches.
One I'm worried about has very few buds and looks browinsh red (but was heavily mulched). It doesn't look dead but the others look more promising. It had rose hips still attached so didn't suffer from browsing... It's a floribunda. Any ideas? Will it survive? (It was a favorite)

Also, if I transfer to pots (I'm moving this summer) before the end of dormancy should I wait until the chance of frost is gone? We regularily frost into May here...Can anyone tell it's my first year with roses?

There is no rule that you have to pot them up while they are dormant... Wait until the snow is gone and they are starting to leaf out. As long as the temps aren't over 70Âº and you water them well in their new pots, they should be just fine...
