Large Crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), sometimes known as Hairy Crabgrass; or Smooth Crabgrass (D. ischaemum).

They are common lawn and garden weeds throughout the U.S.

Your best program is to cut the existing ones off at their necks (don't pull) and mow your lawn higher (3 to 4 inches).

Crabgrass thrives in lawns that are mowed short because the crabgrass grows almost flat and the desirable lawns become stressed when mowed so close. In the future, a tall lawn grass will shade out any crabgrass-germinating-wannabe's.

Hi Joe, thanks, are you sure crabgrass? I have other crabgrass that doesn't look like this. My lawn is mowed very high, and if I posted a picture of the rest of it, you could see that it is working in my yard. (I had to talk to the lawn service multiple times to get them to understand that I want it LONG). Anyway, I"ll go research large crabgrass. I thought I knew crabgrass but now I think maybe not so much.

There are LOTS of grassy weeds called "Crabgrass". The most common crabgrass throughout the U.S. is Digitaria.

I've heard people use the word crabgrass for quackgrass, kikuyu grass, bermuda grass, and just about any pernicious creeping lawn weed grass.
