Hi, I posted previously RE: Plants dying, I appreciate all your help, after many replys and a helpful person emailing me, I have decided to remove half my pond water and add new water. I am bi-passing my softerer, duh, I should have thought of that before......and I am adding chlorine remover while adding the new water.......I checked my ph again before adding the water and it's still high in the high 8's and I also checked it coming out of the hose and it's around 8, so I am not sure what to do to get it lower. Any Good Suggestions out there, or leave it alone???

I hope the remaining plants make it through all this and I will go and get some new floaters in a few days and see. I hope this will help.

Sorry the water softener (salt) damaged your plants. I probably wouldn't of thought of that prior to filling the pond either.

I have never tested my water so..I can't help you. can you do a search on reducing PH and maybe find a solution?

I've been using softened water on my houseplants and they haven't been doing well either. I'm not for sure what effects it has on them. One water softener guy told me that there shouldn't be much salt in the water, if you use your softener correctly and don't use your water during regeneration........but I have my doubts about that.

Seil, it's a technique I found here - http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/roses/msg052304253770.html?13 - and thought it would be an interesting idea to try. I put them in a plastic tupperware container because I thought it would be a more stable base instead of just letting the 'pods' move about.

Prostate is three times normal size, on original visit cancer doc couldn't reach the far end of it with his finger, which I think he found a bit unusual. So they say that those beads? pearls? of radioactive stuff aren't useful in such a situation: a problem of too large proportions, it seems. Some time ago some guys were complaining about being unenthused about the doc sticking his/(her?) finger up their rear end ... ... and I said that they thought that they had a problem ... how would they like to be the doc? They hadn't thought of that! Sometimes helpful to put yourself into someone else's shoes (rubber gloves?). Hypothetically, that is. I wondered about telling this story here this afternoon, as I didn't want to appear to be dragging this message back to the top, unnecessarily ... ... but there were some issues to deal with, apart from that ... ... so here's the story. As I was taking son home from the cancer centre to his place, as we approached a signal light on the main street in our city, going with the green, a slim young lady stepped off of the curb on the left on the far side, texting as she walked. I slowed some, but as she approached the middle of the street, she stopped ... ... then, as we were closer, began walking again ... ... and I was on the brakes. Then she decided that it would be a good idea to stop. Don't know whether she saw us ... or heard my leaky/noisy muffler, too close for comfort. I'll have to tell the garage, where they told me last year that the muffler wasn't in good shape ... but that I didn't need to worry about it asphyxiating me. Maybe it helped a young lady avoid a skinned shin? (There's a $400.00 fine, recently imposed, for distracted driving: they say that it's causing more fatalities than the drunks, lately). Maybe I should have pulled over and gone back to ask her whether she knew how to get tire tracks across her legs? ole joyfuelled

I lost my first GE, but had plbanted it in a poor site. The second time I was much more careful and backfilled the planting hole with lots of lovely leaf mold. That was nine years ago and GE has thrived and is one of the focal points in a bed of hosta. I would wager that I have watered the entire bed only once or twice in its existence, The hosta receives morning sun and shade in the afternoon. Since your picture shows GE in flower now, I suspect it has been raised in a greenhouse and force fed. You will probably need to pamper it at the beginning to wean it from its hothouse environment.

I suggest, Sensitive Plant. I don't know the real name, but it is in the Mimosa family. Low growing plant which gets very thick using deep underground runners. Very invasive and will take over any lawn if allowed to escape. I love it! I do not want to deal with a lawn. I refuse to baby green grass to grow in Florida. I do not have sprinklers, nor wish to spend a ton of money on fertilizer. I let this plant take over and I love it. You can abuse it, walk on it, do anything to it and it doesn't die. Fabulous ground cover. Takes full sun and partial shade. No water. It amazes me every day. My next door neighbor isn't thrilled because those thick underground runners appear in her very expensive lawn. I don't care. My property looks deep green and very pretty and it covers a large area. After we bypassed the water softner for outside watering all my plants are much inproved. I use that water for the house plants too.

Never had the water tested but I believe that salt does come through the softened water.

Do not add anything to lower your ph.

Messing with it is worse on plants and fish than a steady high ph.

Well, we made it through the weekend with the water change and things are finally looking better, I went today and purchased more WH and some really huge w lettuce, I also purchased some floating plant food. I hope this helps. I have beautifully clear water so my bio-filter must be doing it's job. the ph looks like it's come down a wee bit. So all is well for now except we need tons more rocks to finish around the pond edge and for the waterfall. So it's off to the rock pits here and yond. Thanks everyone for all your help. I am glad I found this forum.

I heard and read that white vinegar lowers your ph and baking soda raises it.

I have tried it, one day. But the water changes so often, I would rather leave it alone as the above buyorsell888 had posted. I am no expert or pro, so I hope mother nature takes care of it. My fish are swimming like crazy so I guess they are okay. As far as my plants go, I am going to give them a special soak of miracle grow or plant food in a separate container just enough to let them soak in some nutrients before putting them back in the pond. I am just waiting for my pond to go through its cycle so I can finally see my fish at the bottom again.
