Comments (3)I forgot to say that it is ninebark of the "Diablo" variety, because there are other ninebarks with other colored foliage, including I think golden. The ninebark looks great with blue green evergreens. Oh, and for another plant that looks good mixed with evergreens, there is redtwig dogwood, which has light green leaves but bright red twigs. Another plant that gives you a burst of red color in the fall is winterberry holly. It's not evergreen like some hollies, but really bright with the berries. But you have to have a male and female bush to get the bright berries. The male bushes are somewhat smaller and inconspicuous. Bunnies love to gnaw on winterberry twigs though, same with blueberries. There are other evergreen hollies that also have red berries if you're set on evergreen....See MoreNewly planted Weeping Cherry Tree
Comments (4)transplant shock.. and probably over watering ... you water.. when the tree needs water.. insert finger to see when the soil is drying.. trees do not need all that much water.. once deeply watered and properly mulched ... maybe not for another month.. depending on soil type ... to avoid leaf damage on transplant.. you transplant such.. when they are dormant.. or leafless ... just try not to love it to death.. with too much water... never fert it.. and basically ignore it for a while ... it will either take off.. or not.. but you worrying about it wont help .... ken...See MoreCan we plant a weeping cherry tree here?
Comments (14)The weeping cherry is very important to the significant other, she's already gone and bought the tree. When pulling out the dogwood, the soil seemed clay like there and drainage wasn't very good (I soaked the ground to pull out the dogwood and the ensuing hole filled with water and didn't appear to want to drain at all). Should I dig wider and deeper and fill with gravel/sand? I was worried the tree might be too close to the house and was trying to convince her of this, but she is pretty set on the spot. Is it worth the argument or do you think I can make it work? I don't want to put excess maintanance work on myself if it is going to need extra pruning being so close the house. Here are some pics of the tree and the hole. I WAG'd the distance from the house and its about 14' to the hole. PS Thanks all you're help is invaluable!...See MoreCan I use a pool noodle to protect weeping cherry tree from sun scald?
Comments (10)do you have the latin name of the tree??? .. its cold tolerance might make a difference ... we usually have to buds from cold damage.. if we want a spring flower show ... sun scald.. on the other hand is a trunk issue ... i have used 4 inch corrugated drain pipe ... to protect from vermin and sun .. but it allowed a lot of empty space for air movement ... but you have a tight nestled trunk ... am i correct in presuming your noodle is tight on the trunk ... i worry about trapped moisture.. and bugs ... im also wondering .. if within that temp range ... whether temps are not really an issue ... WC is bulletproof in my MI ... but flower production can be variable due to spring deep cold affecting the flower buds ... and i am positive it get a lot colder than 26 ... and if i could spell it.. i would tell you i have a kwanzan cultivar ... ken...See Morecalistoga_al ca 15 usda 9
