pruning unidentified rose bush/shrub

Hi!

When I bought my home 2 years ago, a friend gave me a rose bush/shrub and we planted it together. I am not sure what type of rose bush/shrub it is (amateur gardener didn't keep plant info) but given my zone (-30C in winter) I assume it is an explorer rose variety. The first winter I didn't protect it and last summer it bloomed beautifully all summer, and tripled in size. It was still trying to bloom well into November after a few frosts! Anyhow, I didn't want to mess with a good thing, so I left it again this winter unprotected and did not prune it. As the snow has mostly melted, my rose bush/shrub still has the all the old leaves from last fall with some almost bloomed preflower buds. It generally looks sad, with a damaged stem too. I'd like to know how to prune it properly and if I have to wait until after my frost date to do so (not until May 7-10 in my zone). Also if someone can give me advise on better winter care for my little beauty I would really appreciate it!

Sorry for the novel!
