Pruning newly planted shrub?

Hi All,
In May of this year I planted new shrubs - 2 summerwine Ninebarks. I bought them at 2 different nurseries and was told at one of them that these should be pruned every year. I don't know about that, but I was going to prune one of them that is the leggier of the two after it blooms. The blooms are on now and are getting ready to open up soon. Is it OK to cut back since I just planted it? I am thinking the plant is expending energy to bloom and then to grow and will have to deal with the summer heat, so maybe pruning will be too much this year? Thanks in advance for your help.
