Looking for seed suggestions to add to next years garden?

Was wondering if I list the seeds/flowers I currently have if anyone might be able to make a few suggestions as to what could look at adding for next years garden?

Here are the seeds I have - all annuals

Yellow Snapdragon

Pink Snapdragon

Victoria White Salvia

Salvia Evolution

Petunias - Red - Trailing

Petunias - Purple - Trailing

Salvia - 12 Pack - Deep Purple

Salvia - Bonfire

Nicotiana - Purple

Nicotiana - White

Plus I have

A mini rose bush - pale pink

A bright pink "full" size rose bush

2 Siberian Irises - Yellow with Purple outer leaves

Want to make a few changes/additions for next year but not sure what to look for, except would like saome later blooming flowers and maybe more perrenials.

Gardens are 2.5'x10' and 2.5x2.5.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any of the little Crystal series Zinnia, any of the Profusion series Zinnia, and any of the Magellan series Zinnia. No garden should be without 'em!

Looks like you have a lot of spikey things. I see from another post you made that you are looking for perennials -- try to get something tall and wispy like thalictrum aquilegiafolium, then some daisy shapes - rubbeckia speciosum is deep golden yellow -- would that match your snaps? You could also just plant plain old shasta daisy or one of a designer shape. Or Coneflower, which comes in all kinds of colors.

Right now it looks like you've got a purple/yellow /white with a splash of red. If you keep that, just look for different shapes of flowers that would fit the color scheme.
Daylilies would be easy to fit in.

Hello, I am tagging onto this thread so as not to break the rule of posting a topic that is already posted. I hope people are still reading this thread and will reply. :D I too am planning my garden for next year. We also just bought an acre, so I'm reading this thread with interest! We also have bermuda and johnson grass growing where I want my garden. We also have moles and grasshoppers in droves! I have created a layout and developed a bit of a plan. I know where I want my permanent plants like fruit trees and shrubs. I have a riding mower and am looking at buying a used tiller. But, my questions will help me make this decision! I am thinking about making the paths between beds lawn that I can just mow with the mower, then just rake or blow the grass clippings into the beds. Would it work to put pavers between the lawn path and the bed to keep the grass out? I am wanting to start some beds right away, so I could purchase some compost and supplies. However, I also have moving boxes I can use to begin a lasagna system. I have tons of leaves in the back area I can cart to the garden area. Do I need to till up any of this space? It will be 1/4 acre (includes area for fruit trees). Or, I could order some truckloads of compost and do it all at once. My biggest worry about that is working it into the existing dirt and killing the bermuda where I want to kill it. The existing dirt is like cement right now - even after watering. Does this mean I need a tiller? Or, do I hope that putting compost on top of compacted dirt will work? How well will plant roots break into that? Thanks for reading. emepro

Lass, Luckily, privacy isn't a requirement. We're trying to establish gardens that are visible & enjoyable for our neighbors as well as by us. My goal is to make them easy to see. We all often sidle up to the fences in the evening and talk, so if I put shrubbery there they might think I didn't like talking to them anymore. My neighbors don't spray. In fact, when I was gardening near her Knock-outs in May, I noticed that she had really bad rose slug damage & BS. I asked if I could lend a hand & help keep them up, & she said 'Please do!!' She was going to SP her knock-outs because she's in her 70's and didn't really want anything that required maintenance. I'm only in my 40's, and although they ARE KO's, I really think it's important to save otherwise decent & healthy roses since so few people make the effort to have roses anymore. I do have a lilac in that area, and I'm planning on some arbor vitaes for vertical interest near the center of where my future statue will be....right after I win the lottery & can afford a $3000 statue. :) I also want a grape vine, but I've been directed by the DH to take small steps. Right now the neighbors share their garden veggies, and we reciprocate with cooking herbs and mints. Would love to have lots of roses & grapes to share also. ---Laura

What an interesting idea! Years ago- maybe 30- I visited a cousin in Ohio who had an impressive medicinal herb garden that included, I think, the apothecary rose and a rugosa or two. I wish I knew more about cooking and medicinal roses but I don't have much to offer. What might help a little is that if you visit the Antique Rose Emporium's website, they tell you which of the roses they offer have hips and which of those may grow for you. You might be able to call or email someone there (or any other antique rose nursery, I suppose) and get more information and advice. You might also get some information from the HelpMeFind roses website. I don't know if there is a lot there on roses useful for cooking but they will be helpful in letting you know whether that rose fits your specific growing conditions. Please let us know what you finally decide and how well the roses you choose accomplish their purpose.

Send for garden catalogs for ideas. Try what you like. Parks Seed, Johnny's Selected Seeds, Bluestone Perennials, Whiteflower Farms, all have nice catalogs. Even longtime gardeners are always trying new plants. Pick up some gardening magazines at Barnes and Noble for more ideas.

You mentioned you were considering winter sowing this year. The forum has lists of seeds that work for your zone.

I think you might be surprised that your snap dragons and salvia will probably re-seed and come back next year, mine do and I could be zone 6a. lamium is a very nice ground cover with nice foliage and small pinkish purple flowers, compliments hostas really nice, lilies are always a nice addition as they have nice foiage most of the season, they have many many colors, yellow rudbeckia has nice yellow flowers that last a long time, they usually bloom the 1st year, so I hear. I second the profusion zinnias. Grow easily from seed. I also like melampodium which is a yellow annual that grows in a nice clump about 18" by 18". Also nicotiana lime green is great with purple majesty millet. The purple millet may be too large for your area though.

A short variety of Shasta Daisy would be nice....

Other perennials you might like are:

Salvia azurea (this one gets very tall, but blooms well into the fall and has the most wonderful sky blue flowers)

Agastache (some are perennial)

Scutellaria alpina...a great little spreading plant with nice flowers.

Go to the malls and pick their dead heads. That's how I got started.
