Suggestions for Companion to Pink shrub rose
Comments (11)I live south of you, in zone 9a and I grow a lot of Belinda's Dream roses. One of my favorites! I would recommend daylilies, which come in all colors except blue, (and they are working on that). The daylilies that I like best are evergreen, so I always have some green for cover under the roses. Another favorite is salvia Greggii, in a variety of colors. One of my favorites is 'Raspberry Royale' and is a very compatible pink, on the strong side. This salvia is a perinneal, and makes a low growing little bush that fits nicely under the roses. It can take a lot of sun, and blooms here until frost. This year, I am growing alliums with my roses. You will need to really consult the catalogs as to which alliums we can grow here on the Texas Coast, but I found several varieties that are marvelous. Not the enormous round blooms, but substantial enough to satisfy me. I don't know if they will come back next year or not, but in any case, I will add to them for next year. I really like the effect. My friend has a large rose bed, and all around the edge, she planted miniature roses. They have all fared very well, and it is a unique look. She also used miniature roses as a partere in other beds. If you like 'Belinda's Dream', I would suggest that you consider the 'KnockOut' rose. It comes in red or pink, and now there is a double variety. One of the most spectacular roses I have ever seen. Comments (7)You might consider 'Caldwell Pink,' also on the Earthkind list. That was the most disease resistant rose I ever grew. I don't remember it ever having a leaf or two drop from Blackspot at any given time. It's only drawback is that is has NO scent whatsoever. Unfortunately, that's a big one for me, but you don't mention scent as one of your criteria. Seriously, though, if anyone would be interested in starting a rose breeding program for areas with high humidity, 'Caldwell Pink' would be a good place to start....See MoreNeed suggestions for a disease resistant, hardy yellow shrub rose
Comments (42)Prairie Harvest is a nice yellow that will die back to the ground and come back vigorously for me every year. No disease, but the thrips love it. In the sun, it will fade to a chalky whitish light yellow. There is a new yellow knockout this year, but I don't know much about it. No, I'm not talking about Carefree Sunshine. Molineau is a nice yellow that nicely survives my Chicago winter with protection. A good bloomer, with nice fragrance Topaz Jewel gets BS and is not as hardy as other Rugosas, but survives in my garden with no protection. Last year, I had to cut it almost to the ground, though. TJ grows at akward angles, so is best to grow in a closely planted group. Perdita is pink in my garden. Not at all yellow for me. RU sells a yellow sport of Tamora called Lovely Child that has worked well in my garden. Here's a pic Julia Child is floppy. Strike it Rich isn't really yellow. Think Cantalope. I grew it this year and really like it. Not much fragrance though. I have grown Livin Easy and like it a lot, so Easy Going should be a good one. Lemon Spice is my favorite Yellow. I protect it and spray it, so it probably doesn't fit your criteria. But, if you want a non stop bloom machine for cutting and sniffing, Lemon Spice is the answer. Gets kind of tall and lanky. Jude the Obscure is winter hardy for me with minimal protection, but not really yellow. Apricot. Great smeller, though. The only yellow that I have that is disease resistant w/o spraying is Prairie Harvest. Al...See More'Snowdon' or Other Large Shrub Rose
