Growing from Seed

Which one would you do?

I wanted to propogate some seeds. Which way would you do it?

I can:

1. Put some trays on a window shelf inside the house (around 70-72 degrees). That window gets direct morning light, but not much afternoon light. I do not want to put any grow lights above this for various reasons.

2. Put trays in the carport shed (80-95 degress). I could put grow lights on these set on a timer and, maybe, a fan to circulate air.

Which would you do and why?

Seeds will be tomatoes, broccoli, may some other veggies.

I like to start my seeds outdoors when there is no chance of frost, sometimes in larger pots (so I don't have to transplant tiny seedlings), trays, whatever is most convenient and on hand, sometimes sow directly in the ground, keep them in a shady spot sometimes, sometimes not. Then I don't have to worry about hardening them off or their getting used to outside.

Being in the south, maybe it is too hot although tomatoes love hot weather so long as they get enough water.

I'm way north of you, so the only time I start seeds inside is during winter or early spring a month or two before the last frost until it is safe to transplant them outside. But it is more difficult, I sometimes have to deal with damping off, leggy seedlings, and definitely hardening off outside which takes some thinking and being home.

And I'm no expert by any means, but I have experimented enough to know what usually works for me.

Ciao all- Easy: Opalka, hands down. It's a champ, produces very well and is my machine for just about any tomato product you could make from sauce to V8 juice to ketchup to salsa. I can't say enough good things about this awesome variety.

Full size glass front refrigerator. If this is too much, then refrigerator drawers. Ice machine (undercounter) Microwave Popcorn machine Dishwasher would be nice.

That's true, slipped my mind. What material would you suggest? I don't have the plants yet, but I'll be getting them soon within this month perhaps. How would you situate the hay around the pots? (And are you saying 4 bales for each pot or four for both? I'm guessing you'll probably need to know the size of the pots tho for this) I'm all for planting them in the ground and keeping them there until Spring tho too. I just didn't know if there was going to be any root growth in which I could accidental harm the plant while digging it back up. I'm not sure, as I just moved here and all, but I looked it up and it said over the entire past season there was an 'accumilation of 53.4 inches'. Idk if that would help tho since it didn't say when the snow melted and if more snow fell after, etc.

Most common advice is that plant should overwinter in container without extra protection in zone 2 higher than plants rating -so if you are in z5 and they are hardy to z3, should be no problem. But insufficient drainage will kill many plants, so make sure that is adequate. You could put them in ground, even just halfway but make sure the surrounding soil is well draining too and that there isn't any standing water around them. If you want to add extra drainage holes it won't hurt, drill some into side of pot close to the bottom. Mulch (like fallen leaves) is good protection, should be put on soil surface after hard freeze - just as recommended for garden beds. Tops could use some protection (like burlap) if they are in windy location or very close to road (salt?). Otherwise, I think, they should overwinter OK if they are in appropriate zone.
