help all seedlings die every time! indoor grow

Hi,

IÃ¯Â¿Â½ve tried to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumber many times , and I fail every time. I always reach the stage of the seedling has first or second true leaves.

I have tried may soil mix including Hydrponics but every time itÃ¯Â¿Â½s the same.

The peppers some time live and grow to maturity

Attached are pics of my setup.

Temp is always between 21 Ã¯Â¿Â½ 25C

Light CFL 3x 32W

RH 45+

Water , RO PH 6.3~6.9

Seeds are from parkseed.

What am I doing wrong????

They are being kept too wet, causing 'damping off', which kills the plant. You need to water from the bottom, ie set the pot in a saucer, fill the saucer with water, let sit for 15 minutes and then dump off the unused water. Allow to dry out a day or two before watering again - sometimes, it's a week between waterings.

Your soil should have some grit mixed into it, in the form of sand or perilite - this will allow the new roots to dry out and allow oxygen to reach them. You have to check them every day to see what they need - they're like babies - need constant attention. I believe it's worth every penny to buy already-established plants.

It's not wet that kills the seedlings in "damping off" syndrome - all seedlings need moisture - but the microfungi that thrive in damp, stagnant conditions. Sterilize the compost before planting. A neat way to do this is bake it in the microwave for 3-4 minutes if you only need a small quantity. Secondly ensure that there is adequate ventilation. If necessary put a fan next to the tray, though you can also get good results sowing out of doors during the summer. Better luck next time!

There are no hard and fast rules and it's never just one thing. Seedlings grow just fine for me with natural light in a south facing room. There are plenty of windows. A small ficus calls this room home and is very happy. I've grown aquarium plants in this room with no artificial lighting as well. Along with lighting considerations, care must also be given to avoid over watering. Keep the sterile seed starting mix moist but not soggy. Also, apply dilute liquid fertilizer only after the second set of true leaves are formed. Some other things that are frequently overlooked -- seedlings tend to be less leggy if there's some natural breezes and good air circulation. My winters aren't too harsh so I set seedlings out on a bench in bright partial shade to keep them pre-hardened during daylight hours. Wind hardening is part of the overall picture. If I didn't have this well lit room, I would use cheap shop light fixtures with full spectrum (natural sunlight) bulbs (5500-6500 Kelvin). I'd run them on a timer for 12 hours on and 12 hours off to simulate a normal day at the equator. And I'd run an indoor fan periodically.

What a fun project! I noticed your post because purple coneflowers were the first plant I grew from seed. I actually did something similar. I started them indoors but had no room, so I potted the seedlings outside in pots before they had any "true" leaves. I also started seeds in the ground and then dug them up and potted them while they were quite small. All of them have grown into full size plants. (And now I have too many!) Often it's best to keep your seedlings in their small peat cells until they get more leaves... sometimes regular potting soil can be too heavy for seedlings. I usually leave baby seedlings in their little cells until they have 2 or 3 sets of leaves. But in the case of these flowers--which have lived through an entire Texas summer outdoors in full sun in little 4-inch pots with no fertilizing and irregular watering, I would say they're pretty tough! I wouldn't worry; they should do fine!

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I think you might be right and not fertilizing could be the problem. Next time, I'll do an experiment as Ignatz suggested: one half with no added food, the other half fed. I'll also use a plain seed starting medium. As for why it's 75 degrees, I am growing inside my house (bathroom to be exact) for lack of anywhere better. Our house has poor insulation so the heat runs nonstop in the winter, causing the temp to get kind of high at times. The bathroom is also probably quite humid given people using the shower several times a day, bumping the temp up further. I'm amazed you all think overwatering was the issue. I know how easy it is to do that, and was really stingy with water. Yes, my pots did have drainage holes. They were plastic nursery pots, not peat. Would you say that watering once a week is too much between 1-2 months old? Also: Do you think my city water might be affecting the plants badly? One source said it was high in chlorine, which seems real bad for young plants but perhaps I'm mistaken. I'll try changing up my starting pots, too. Cells to 3.5 inch pots makes sense. Garden soil can increase chances of damping off, although it can be OK with older seedlings. But it needs more than compost to keep it from compacting. I would personally avoid it and just use plain old potting mix. Moisture retaining is problematic because it drains poorly and basically makes drowning roots way too easy to do. Organic potting mix can be an issue because it can result in a fungus gnat infestation. Personally, I use sterile seed starting mix for starting seedlings, then just regular old cheap non-organic potting mix (miracle gro or whatever--something I know will be fluffy and well-draining and won't have big chunks of wood, etc. in it) when I pot up. Using compost can result in fungus gnats, too. It also has a tendency to get and stay mucky. I think a small percentage mixed in with a nice, fluffy potting mix is fine, though, as long as you don't have fungus gnat issues. I like to use organic materials and methods, but seedling time isn't really the best place to use those, IMO, unless you are a commercial grower that needs to keep things organic throughout the entire process for certification purposes.

Aside from the good advice listed here, you may want to also consider electrifying the soil for anything that is having a difficult time surviving. It can help your plant get past any rough spots that you're having.

Soil electrification helps plants repair themselves from various forms of disease or stress, boosts nutrient uptake, and helps activate soil bacteria. Furthermore, particularly for your situation, it helps with the germination rate of seeds.
