Apple Seedling and Grow Lights

So I have 3 one-month old apple seedlings, 1 one-month old cherry seedling, and 1 one-month old apricot seedling. I spouted them all and they are now all in their own pots. My question is, How close should these plants be to the bulbs of my grow light? I've heard that plants should be about 4in from the bulbs but I wasn't sure if that was only for veggies and herbs. I'm not too informed about trees at the moment.

As a side note, I know that most if not all fruit bearing trees are grafted. I'm simply growing these to grow them.

All your seedlings are best grown in full sun, not usually in short supply in July. If you are using florescent grow lights, it is not possible to approach the intensity of sun light, so you should not expect the same growth. As soon as you can, I would put them in the sunshine. Al

They are actually out in the sun whenever it's not raining or too windy. I was asking about the time under lamps only because i'd need to know when i bring them inside. So if they cannot be outside due to rain/whatever, how long should the lights be on?

For germination only starting 8 days ago you are definitely on track. Some plants obviously take different amounts of time to germinate and this is why you are seeing the variance in plant progress. One thing to consider is that nutrients are not really needed until plants form their 2nd set of true leaves. The seed and plant contains all it needs until that point to get going. Doesnt hurt to add weak nutes, but probably a step you can eliminate and it doesnt really do much for the seedlings at first. Looking good.

I checked my local area and asked several of my friends at work and found one that knew a guy who does distribution for warehouse lighting (sounds odd right?). So I found (unfortunately) after I purchased a 4x 2' T5 HO setup for ~$100 that I could have gotten a 6x 4' T5 HO for the same price with similar bulbs. Moral of the story: 1) 'grow lights' are nothing more than 6500K bulbs* 2) There is no such thing as a 'special' 'grow light' fixture -- with two caveats: Some grow light have 'lenses' behind the bulbs for focusing light down, and/or have several mounting brackets on the frame for hanging/vertical/horizontal mounting. 3) Simplicity is key. If I knew a week ago what I know now, I could have more than doubled my light output/area. 4) LED's are an expensive option at this point in time (from what I understand) So it's a learning process, but I guess that's why we're here right? I'm somewhat an newbie but done several hours of reading on the indoor growing/starting subject with artificial lighting. * 6500K bulbs work, from what I understand having half a set of 2800K's on hand for fruit/vegetable production is possibly a 'bonus' during that stage. Also I have read several posts regarding purely 6500K full production so I guess hands up on this one? -- Though scientific journals indicate that proper red/blue spectrum are important for proper development, blue being key i.e. 6500K's... So I'm still looking for a correlation from the pure LED documents to pure florescent. Good luck, I'm doing my indoor grow project now with what I've researched.

It is not just the quantity of light (number of hours) but also the quality of light that matters. A T12 light gives much weaker light than a T5. Neither gives a plant the equivalent light energy or spectrum of the sun. I definitely saw an improvement in growth when I increased the number of hours my seedlings were exposed to T12 lights, and 24/7 produced the best results. With a better light source, like T5s, a dark period seemed to help. But I think 18 hours of T5 light was better than 14 or 16. HID and HPS lights provide much better light than any fluorescent light can, and could probably be used for a shorter light cycle. Choosing supplemental lighting that provides something close to what natural sunlight provides is more complicated than just matching the number of hours of exposure.

Honestly I can't think of any stage of the growing process where width of the root zone will be the space-limiting factor instead of width of the canopy. I can't imagine narrow containers will solve a space issue for you unless you were using unnecessarily wide containers previously.

Once you've hardened them off and exposed them to outside conditions, there is no reason to bring them back in. They should be in a suitable growing medium in their pots, and pots should have adequate, functioning drainage holes. They will be fine in rain and still getting more light on a rainy overcast day outdoors than you can give them inside.

i highly doubt they would be fine outdoors in the storm we just had. 70mph winds that took out most of the trees in our neighborhood. most people are without power at the moment. i think that storm was more then enough to toss them around. even without the wind just the amount of water coming down would have uprooted them.

I know I wouldn't leave any of my seedlings out in any storms! You should keep them under the lights at least 18 hours a day, and as close to the light as possible when indoors. Hope this helps :)

I have to agree with the outdoors voters. Apples are totally hardy and would be much healthier and happier outdoors. Once hardened off - and that is important - there is no reason to waste energy on growlights. You could put them under cover if a storm was threatening. They also need to go dormant come winter to remain healthy and they won't do that under lights indoors.

Outside definitely...Even in a hurricane the seedling is likely to be unaffected unless a tree drops right on it and crushes it. The wind just plain isn't going that fast that close to the ground and the seedling is tiny and has no wind loading....big tall trees are in danger of high winds, young trees are not.
