capillary mats for soil blocks

Curious what all you soil block users out there use for capillary mats?

Do you buy the expensive setup or do you have a "do-it-yourselfer" way?

I have a lot of large flat trays I use for seedlings (in soil blocks and pots) that I'd like to continue using but they are not very deep, only about an inch.

This year I tried using some leftover quilt batting under the soil blocks. Then I could keep the quilt batting wet from the one end. It worked ok, but not the best.

So, what do you use?
