A new Lotus Grower Question

I have a couple of questions re my lotus. This year was my first at trying to grow a lotus. It's in a pot next to the pond. Anyway I had 7 or 8 leaves going over the past few months and they started turning yellow and crunchy so I cut them off (stems left way above water line). There are a few floaters left but are looking a little rough. Is it time now for the plant to stop growing until next year and over the winter - really no winter in Tampa - just let the pot sit where it is? I was wondering if I could put some other little water plant in the same pot for the winter so it wouldn't look so empty or would that not work with the roots maybe harming the tuber? I'm trying to learn as I go. Thanks.
