Help with sunflowers

Did not see a section for sunflowers so I'll post this here since they were started from seeds.

My girlfried planted I believe they are called Gigantic Sunflowers about 6 months ago from seeds. She has been in the garden everyday since checking on the progress. Out of of couple dozen they range from 3ft to maybe 7ft tall. Just recenlty at least half of them have been eaten about half way up the stock/stem and have fell over. Not sure if it's insects or squirells.

Is this a common problem, and what do some of you suggest? I hope we can save the ones that are still standing.

I'm betting Squirrels. I lost most of my sunflowers to the little critters a couple years ago. You can try "bitter apple" spray or hot pepper oil. Apply it to the plants to make them not so tasty to the animals.

We had quite a rainfall yesterday accompanied by a gale of wind... nothing new for this part of Canada... Now my 3-4 foot sunflowers are bent over, laying on the ground. My question to anyone kind enough to respond is "will they return to their standing position without my help?" or will they not survive?

When you find sunflowers that seem to have been chewed and have fallen over, usually cut worms are to blame. However, if there were flowers and seeds forming, a squirrel might have taken matters into hos own hands to bring the treat down to his level. Were there flowers and were they eaten? Linda C

Last year my dogs were running through my gardens and wrecking them, and grazing on things too. Like Sierra said, I was able to teach them to stay out with boundaries. It helped, especially with the puppy, to put up some of that cheap metal folding fence from HD (I got a semi-fancy bronze looking one). It would never keep them out, they can go right over, but it reminds them visually. I have a lot of different flower beds and they would forget even when they were trying to be good.

Maybe it has just stopped flowering? Some sunflowers bloom repeatedly some don't. If the leaves look good I would say they are just at the end of the bloom cycle. Plant some more seeds and start new sunflowers. Sunflowers like full sun, but here in Florida maybe some shade from the afternoon sun in the summer.
