Though not an especially fast grower, the camellia will eventually get much larger than the area you have available. And it would not be terrifically happy in 'hot afternoon sun'. Cycads (sago palms) are not hardy in this area and cleyera is uncommon here, although you can sometimes find ternstroemia (related to cleyera), but again it will get large eventually, needs even moisture and would prefer some afternoon shade. I'd suggest Choisya 'Aztec Pearl'. A hybrid form of Mexican orange, this tends to be smaller and more compact in form than C. ternata and features narrow, lacy foliage and a profusion of fragrant flowers in spring with a repeat bloom in fall. The flowering vine (flowers are very aromatic!), known as Confederate Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, would probably work there, grown as a groundcover, Shear lightly occasionally to promote branching and a neater appearance. I grow 2 types of dwarf evergreen shrubs that make a low, tidy hedge. Pieris japonica 'Cavatine' and Nandina domestica 'Wood's Dwarf' There are dwarf variegated forms of Pieris that would probably appreciate a more sunny exposure. I have one in morning sun and after 20 years, with no pruning, it's only about 3½ ft. tall. Nandina 'Wood's Dwarf' is a very attractive wintertime shrub, as the foliage turns red and burgundy. I've never had berries on mine (sterile?), so there has been no chore of removing them, before the birds scatter the seed all over the countryside! You might also investigate some of the dwarf conifers, such as False Cypress, Chamaecyparis pisifera & C. thyoides. You can shear them almost anytime to control height and width. Leucothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow' or L. axallaris (agressive!) and Dwarf Boxleaf Euonymus japonicus, (available in green or with yellow or white variegation), could also be candidates for the location. One of the wax myrtles (bayberry/wax myrtle). Does Myrica cerifera (Southern wax myrtle) grow there? If not then maybe its Myrica pensylvanica (Northern bayberry), which I think is tardily deciduous, but much hardier. It will hold onto its leaves longer in mild weather and may actually be semi-evergreen much further south. M. cerifera may survive up there, but would probably burn back in zone 6, I'm thinking. M. cerifera is truly evergreen (down to a certain temperature anyway -- maybe around 0-5 degrees F.). Genus name may have changed to Morella.
