My Deutzia

Hello everybody. I have a beautiful Deutzia that is positioned quite close to a Japanese maple tree. I have been contemplating moving the Deutzia to give it more room. I finally brought it up to one of the men from the tree company that I used and he said if I would trim the bottom of the maple tree to make it look more like a tree, it would give the Deutzia the room and the light it needed. He was right! So pruned the bottom of the maple and sure enough now the shrub has room and light. So what's the problem? The left side of the shrub (now that I can see it) is stunted and there is alot of dead wood inside the shrub. So, question 1 is will that side fill in eventually now that it has room and light? Question 2 is where and how do I begin to get rid of the deadwood? Should I get right down on the ground at the base and just start cutting some of the stems down? Thanks everybody for any help you can give.
