Thank you for the heads up. Stealing a picture and renaming!! I saw this on Ebay and believed the story about it being an unidentified found rose. I shan't be buying from that vendor.

I think you two are talking about two different white roses and two different vendors. The OP referenced someone who is obviously reselling bare root roses, and using a photo of the wrong rose to do it.

I have bought from the Florida vendor who sells the unidentified white rose, if this is the one you're talking about nastarana, and I have this rose in my garden.

There are reputable, honest dealers who peddle their wares on eBay, whether it be roses or any other product. There are also dealers who are, shall we say, less than honorable. Do your homework if you plan to buy, and beware if the deal seems to be too good.

Stealing pictures and even descriptions of roses is not as uncommon as you think. Just receiently I was making infomation sheet for roses that will be used at a District rose society auction/raffle. I had permission from Ashdown Roses who donated the roses to use their pictures and writeups. For one of the roses I found a better picture and and write up on the Heirloom Rose site. I wrote and asked permission to use it. Heirloom was very thankfull as they had reciently found someone using their pictures and write ups to sell roses on the internet! I of couse, on the info sheet have given credit to the nurseries.

Maybe it is my computer security background, but I would never take anyone elses pictures or descriptions without asking first.

I know this issue comes up regularly with Ebay dealers. I am not sure why have a picture at all. Many reputable dealers manage to sell without offering a pic of every variety, Greenmantle for example. It is perfectly legitimate to link to the relevant HMF page. What I found especially upsetting was the idea of passing off a known, patented cultivar as a found rose, if that is indeed what happened.

Nowhere else on the Web do I find my photographs and rose descriptions stolen more often then on eBay. Its like the wild west there; no rules, no enforcement. I have also had repeated problems with a certain California nursery who has the worst reputation of any nursery for not delivering products purchased. (I think many of you know who I mean)

I also have the white found rose from the Florida Ebay seller. She is a wonderful person, and has all of the required nursery paperwork. This rose is so amazing that I would love to know the real name.

Even reputable vendors sometimes lag behind the learning curve. When I was doing some research on 'found' roses, I found that "Caldwell Pink," id'd as 'Pink Pet,' continued to be listed as a 'found' rose, even after the ARS recognized it as 'Pink Pet,' including the Earthkind promotions. There also seems to be general consensus that "Jefferson Rose" is 'Softee,' even though hmf indicates that the identification is tentative. The tensions between botanists, plantsmen, and breeders has not been alleviated by widespread use of the term 'shrub' to mean 'NOT HT, F, GR, POL, MIN, or M-F.'

Hi Jim,
If Chablee's description of "Jefferson" is at all accurate, then I am doubtful it is 'Softee', as the latter has never exceeded 24" in my experience. The "Jefferson Rose" is listed as up to 6 feet tall and almost as wide. That doesn't sound like the 'Softee' I know, but until I see them side by side.....

I bought 'Softee' and 'Jefferson' and planted them side by side before they were "identified" as being the same rose. To my amateur eye, they look just alike; except that 'Jefferson' towers over 'Softee' even though they were planted at the same time.

I personally do not care for ebay which I am actually happy about because I do not need another addiction. ;-)

I buy from a reputable seller who has impeccable feedback, and most importantly, sends me fantastic 2-year old own-root healthy roses with well-developed root systems. I have purchased most of my Buck roses from her, and have never been disappointed with what she sends me.

I do agree, though, it is important to know who you are purchasing from on E-Bay. I usually manage to snag some great buys with prices well below retail.

When Chamblee first introduced Jefferson rose, it was touted as a polyantha, up to three feet in height. Later it became a shrub, I believe. HMF lists Jefferson rose as a synonym for Softee, and uses the same data for both.
If, indeed, Jefferson grows significantly taller than Softee, it could be a seedling or the result of siting it on a toxic dump....

Oh, dear. I bought Jefferson/Softee from Chamblee this fall and have it planted in a bed with little guys. Now it seems I will have to worry about moving it?

My Jefferson Rose got up to about 4' X 3' last summer. I cut it back to about 3' x 3' mid-summer. I guess because of the lack of rainfall in the fall, it did not grow much after being cut back. It seems to be suffering cane die-back from the long, cold winter we have had here in Virginia. Softee is about 12" X 12". If Jefferson continues to shrink, they may end up being the same size. :(

I bought my first ebay roses last year..I ended up paying as much for them as from a nursery because I wanted them and got in a bidding contest. They were Jaune d'Espres, Fantin Latour, and Ruth's German Rose. They arrived in excellent condition and were really big. That was from Murphy's Rose..she also had detailed instructions included.

Most ebay sellers I've dealt with try hard to deliver as promised. Their feedback rating is out there to be shot down by anybody for any reason. Sellers can no longer give any negative feedback to buyers so sellers are quite a bit more vulnerable than a business who operates without a public feedback system. They're just people helping buy groceries for their families I bet and most don't steal pictures because they're perhaps inordinately proud of their own pictures. Or at least having fun with their own pictures.

Summer Snow, so called, is being offered by a vendor who seems to be reselling nursery overstock. If what is offered is indeed the floribunda (or polyantha) from the 1930s which is said to be a bush sport of Cl Summer Snow, itself allegedly a sport of Tauschendon, is anybody's guess. If so, anyone who buys it hoping for an English type rose, is in for a surprise.

The climbing found rose from Florida is altogether different, and I was impressed by the amount of information provided by the vendor, clearly a responsible nursery person and no doubt an excellent source. If only she could ship to CA! I believe that might be the same vendor who was offering a found rose last year which I thought looked a lot like Ophelia.
