Your white climber greatly resembles Cl. Iceberg.

Thanks, I googled them and from pictures and discriptions that seems to be them. A few sites say they are rare? Now if I can figure out what the red ones are.

I believe that in your area (New Jersey?) it is best to wait to prune roses until spring, after the risk of freezing weather has passed. I've heard people say they prune them "when the forsythia blooms."

That being said, if those are climbing varieties of roses you should probably just remove any dead branches but not prune the live ones. Otherwise you may cause them to stop blooming for up to a year.

I'm sure that others in your climate will chime in, and local experts are best for advice on your soil, etc.

And I also think that white rose may be Iceberg (or the Climbing Iceberg version), which is very popular for landscaping here in California.

There are so many reds that it is hard to determine. Can you call the former owner? He or she may have taken great pride in those rose bushes, and would likely be touched if you were to ask what you have and for recommendations on care.

I usually do not prune in the winter unless a gangly branch is interfering with my life in some way. It is better to prune back to the live growth in the spring. That is I echo the comments of others here about pruning.

Since you are new to growing roses, and to gardening in general, I recommend you talk to a consulting rosarian in your area. There is really no substitute for in-person advice and experience from a local rose grower. There is never a charge for talking to a CR, and many of us make housecalls ... in fact, we love to meet and help new rose gardeners to try to keep them on the right track. (A consulting rosarian is just a volunteer who has taken training and is sanctioned by the American Rose Society to offer advice on their behalf. We're out there to help ... that's why we became CRs in the first place.)

As far as pruning, don't do it on these roses in the winter. Wait until March. Blooming forsythia is the usual cue that it's time to prune ... but pruning isn't always necessary. That's where the CR advice comes into play, again. A quick hands-on lesson, whether it's at your place or a rose society pruning workshop (most local rose societies do this in the spring) will get you off to a great start.

Thank you guys so much for the advice and help. I am going to contact them and see if I can get some instruction. Unfortunately, the previous owner pasted away. She was 96. The Granddaughter who I bought the house from does not know much about them other then her grandmother did take very good care of them. I guess they had been neglected for a while since she passed. The first summer in the house I didn't do anything with them,the second summer I started to just water them, now I am attached to them. Last winter I took the advice of a coworker and I did prune them in the winter down to about 6 feet. She told me to leave room for dieback, so I did. Nothing seemed to dieback and the roses grew and bloomed more then they had the previous two years. I will wait though this year. I wll search my pictures to see if I have a better picture of the red roses.

I typically recommend pruning when the forsythia is in bloom in late winter (late March - early April).

There are only 4 rose societies in NJ, two in north Jersey, Jersey Shore, which covers most of central/east central NJ, and West Jersey. The closest to you would be the West Jersey Rose Society.
