Tell me about Helen Hayes & Garden Party

Came across these two at a big box store and was wondering if I need to get them. Curious about how they grow, rebloom and disease resistance. They sure look pretty on HMF. Thanks, Judy

Ah, 'Garden Party'. Sweet honey fragrance, beautiful flower that blew too fast here. Mildewed. Own-roots itself very easily. I miss it--very nice mid-20th century HT. Pollen parent of 'Double Delight'. Growth was on the short side. Fast rebloom.

I have to admit, I LOVE Garden Party, pleasant fragrance, beautiful blooms, though would like to see more on the bush. Lovely cut rose.

I'm still here, just been too busy cleaning up after Ike to visit. 70mph sustained wind force for who knows how many hours, sure did a number on the flowers, Only thing that wasn't damaged were 800 lilies in crates which I put in a barn to weather the storm. Everything else was either flattened or tore up on the Hortnova. Week following was spent replanting and cutting everything back. Now I'm cutting certain flowers that are growing from Horizontal stems rather than vertical. Thinman you'll find that the forum will start picking up again now that some people's growing seasons are over. I'm still growing and already seeding Spring Crops whereas, you guys up north don't have to do that for awhile yet. Cheers Kim Billabong Fresh Flower Farm

Hi Elizabeth I buy the hay in the feed store, since I don't know much about hay I told them that I needed for the garden and I did not want any seeds. They gave me the one I use I think they said coastal hay and they use for horses bedding. I buy 2 times the hay in a year and I put one time just before the heat arrives, helps keep the soil moist and with the weeds. I don't disturb the soil, unless I am going to pick weeds or sometimes old tree roots. For that reason it is better to take out the grass before putting the beds but it is a lot of work so sometimes if there is grass they grow back in spots. When the harvest is done the hay is usually broken down and just add more organic material on top of that. I like to add organic fertilizers if I can that don't smell because they are either attractive to bugs or dogs. If I use any of those I have to add another layer that does not have any smell. I like black cow manure for that reason, no smell. Depending on the crop I will use fertilizer, leafy veggies need more nitrogen let's say than root crops. Tomatoes in the beginning need more nitrogen than when they are having flowers and fruit so I switch. And always use very diluted amounts, it is like in a recipe you can always add more but you can not take it out, the same with sprays for disease or bugs. The blueberries are Emerald and a pollinator that I don't remember the name and the majority are the Sunshine Blues. I also have thornless blackberries that are producing heavy, they are together were I had the mints. If you go to Lowes they have the Sunshine Blue, when planting I used some peat moss and pine bark fines,espoma soil acidifier and azalea fertilizer. Silvia

I thought to ask whether you felt that some women and some men can be best friends, but later in the thread, some spoke of having best friends of the other gender. My mother was ill from the time that I was about six and I had fairly good friendships with a couple of the spouses of our farm helpers, who helped with housework, but they were rather short term, though I recognized one over 20 years later (while we visited the psychiatric hospital, where Mom had been confined and our farm helper's daughter was then, after some hassles with drugs ... and where my ex- later worked as second, then head, of food service for nearly 25 years) ... and I was rather friendly after meeting her that time, for several years with her and her husband. While I don't think that Dad ever told me that he loved me, I knew that he did ... and if I remember correctly, brother said a while ago that he never did to him, either, that he could recall. Brother that took over the farm said that he and Dad worked together for years and never had more than rare and inconsequential disagreements. I can't think of the major family difficulties that mar many family celebrations. My brother is loved by most everyone who knows him, I think, as he doesn't get perturbed much, and is kindly to most everyone, often helping others when they have need ... built a ramp for wheelchair access to their village church. We had some problems with stepmother, who came into the family after I was away to university, as she could be nice at times, but turn mean in an instant. Her daughter didn't like her and picked a cousin as sort of a substitute mother. Step-sister and my brothers got along well, as she does with me, but I seldom see her. She has said on some occasions that Dad never treated her any different than he did the boys, which she appreciated (though he never adopted her - she had a living father for years). Our other brother died in an auto accident in his 40's, over 30 years ago, when his kids were in their teens. We keep in touch with them - I visited all of them, and sister-in-law, within the last month - in Edmonton ... and Georgia. ______________________ Hi Kathy813, I'm wondering whether you would consider it too much of an intrusion on your privacy to discuss the matter, but when I read your message that you don't have a best friend ... and wish that you did ... I wanted to ask what you felt some of the reasons might be, whether you considered yourself too shy to reach out, or had some that you hoped would develop ito best friends, earlier, but were disappointed, or had some more or less so, that moved far away, etc. As I said ... I don't want to trample on your privacy, to walk around over your heart with my hob-nailed boots, etc. I think that it's apparent from what many have said that good friends are precious, add some wonderful new dimensions to one's life, etc. ... ... and worth making some effort to develop, if one has any interest at all ... and worth taking some risks to develop, I think many posters here would say. Ask most of them whether they'd want to give up their best friend ... and they'd likely quietly shake their head, smile, and say, "No way!!". Christine - I have a bucket list of places to see and restaurants to go. Cress was on the list since it is so highly acclaimed, people travel from far places to go there. We waited about a week for reservations and while we were there, they turned away a lot of customers and the place was not even full. And I am sure they don't need the money is like a hobby for them, the owners are the wife a Dr and the husband the chef is a Professor at the University. Of course a hobby like that must leave good money behind. We were staying at the Westin in Lake Mary, nice area with a lot of restaurants that W would prefer but they were not on my list.:) About the atemoya, yes not all the blooms produce fruit same like mangoes, some people hand pollinate them but I don't. When you came to the garden party a few years ago, I only had the green one, Years later I added a red one that I got in Excalibur, it is like a year in the ground after being in the container and produced a couple of fruits last season, hope this season is better. Where I live mildew is not a problem for GP and it doesn't get much bs either. It's a beautiful rose with delicate colors, blooms alot, and is not puny. I had a body bag standard of one for 8+ years. Rooted a cutting and now have a plant in my garden.

Hi Judy,
I recently did a photo thread on the Rose Gallery about Helen Hayes, (now on page 2). She is truly thornless. Her stems are smooth as silk. The blooms are a wonderful medley of orange, yellow, peach & pink. They bloom several to a stem. Mine so far has been quite healthy and rebloom is good here in zone 4. I like mine a lot.

I had GP up north and it was lovely and very hardy for a HT in zone 4/5 with its bud union buried deep. It did get mildew if not sprayed but it had huge fragrant flowers.

Maybe Garden Party is not great for the West Coast because of the mildew problem there. Elsewhere it is a generous bloomer in hot weather, with fewer but very large, full flowers coming in fall. Its hardiness is a plus in the East and Midwest, especially since many other whites are so tender. The plant is nicely full and bushy. Still an outstanding rose.

My GP is from lowes in 1G pot. It hasn't bloomed too much (6 blooms/year) in the last 2 yrs and I'm not able to smell it. I wouldn't replace it if it died.

If you purchase 'Garden Party' from a big box store, you can pretty much be assured 1) that it comes to you via the rose fields of East Texas, and 2) that it is virused.

For those interested in growing this rose own-root, be advised that Vintage has a virus-indexed selection.

Thanks, I can see another thread coming on explaining the difference in buying East Texas roses and virus indexed roses. I am new to roses so don't have a clue. Thanks for the info. Judy

I live in Central Ill. Garden Party is a good rose here. No mildew, but some blackspot. I spray anyway. It blows too quickly in the heat.

Judy, I planted Garden Party last year and loved it. Big, beautiful blooms. I have it planted in the middle of a bunch of pink roses; makes a nice contrast. I think you'd like it.

Hi TJ, Whats ya been up to lately? Sounds like it would look real pretty planted in the middle of pink roses. I hope it turns out to be a good one and not virused if I decide to go back and get it.
