Up to 5000 blossoms per year

Well, I have to share this. What landscape couldn't make room for a rose with 5000 blossoms per year? I ask you. And it is a hybrid musk so one can imagine that the term fragrant is apt. I hope it is very disease resistant. Photo and description on the linked page below.

cape I remember back in 1993 when I got married and my wife and I bought our first home, new construction from Toll Brothers. It was 2750 square feet, 2 levels + unfinished basement colonial. A nice house. The bill when we closed was $290K. We put 20% down so our mortgage was around 230 or so. Interest rate was 7.125%. Combined we were doing a little better than 86K per year, but not by much. When we first bought it, we were both concerned about the size of the mortgage. After 3 years, we were kicking ourselves for not buying a bigger house. Needed a larger tax right off, salaries went up. But we kept the house for another 10 years and without it, we would have never been able to build the dream house we finished last year. I think if the 2 of you have very stable jobs and an 8 month reserve fund (it used to be 3 months, but Suzzie Orman has convinced me that is no longer good enough), and you have great credit and no credit card debt - then you should be able to afford the payments and buy the house. Just remeber to factor in the TAXES and Insurance into those monthly payment calculations. The other thing to keep in mind is that when you buy a new house it won't look like the model. It will have white walls and require a lot of decorating and painting to make it look like the vision you have in your minds. Take a long view on things - maybe a 5 to 7 year plan - to make all that happen. Don't be tempted to start buying lot of stuff and run up your debt. Even though the market is in the crapper right now, owning a home is still one of the best investments you can make in the long run. It is also very satisfying to own a place of your own and shape it into your vision. It is hard work - but worth it. Good luck to you!

Credit cards in responsible hands can be a very good tool to assist in managing money. But like any tool in the hands of fools it can be dangerous. About every 3-5 months I essentially get a free tank of gas from responsible use of a credit card. Or I can have a grocery trip, or go out to eat, probably 5 times. It's income on money I need to spend anyway so it's a benefit. It's not something where I have to buy something I can't use. The problem for so many that have their cards run up to such crazy amounts is they could never get a low interest loan because they're so irresponsible with their money! And if they don't pay off their cards, who thinks they'll pay off the loans? So they go to the loan sharks, aka credit card companies. They watch TV and hear how they need all this stuff and it's "only a few dollars a month" on the credit card. And geez, they shouldn't have to turn off unused lights or use CFLs to cut expenses should they? Oh, no. Put on a sweater in the winter and turn the stat down a few degrees or close off unused areas? Nope. Shouldn't have to do that. Quit driving for the sake of driving? No, that's not right. And then the smokers. I'm sick of the excuses. Everyone I know who has quit smoking agrees that you'll quit smoking one way: When you decide you *want* to quit. Period. No other time so don't make excuses. The ones who don't *want* to quit need to have an excuse. "Addicted" is a popular one. Oh yeah, it's always someone or something else's fault isn't it? I didn't get myself into the credit card bind, it's the credit card's fault. I didn't light the cigarette, it's the tobacco company's fault. I didn't get fat, it's the fast food joint's fault. Or the soft drink companies. I broke my wedding vows but it's my spouse's fault. Poor little me. Boo-hoo-hoo. The world is out to get me. Never heard of personal responsibility? But why should they? They were raised to lie, cheat, steal and blame someone else since they were "traumatized" as a child. Didn't have enough video games, cell phones and their own new car at 15. Cry me a river... Now I certainly support anyone who decides to quit smoking, lose weight, change diet habits, improve their financial situation, etc. As long as they take responsibility, blame the right party and start the journey. When you do that, it's much easier to accomplish your goal than expecting everyone else to do it for you, or tell you how bad you have it, or whatever. You get my support but I won't coddle you. You have to do it yourself. You'll have an occasional shoulder if needed, advice if wanted too. I won't lecture people who choose to spend their money on cigarettes, or fudge, or inflated interest, when it's their choosing. Hey, I laugh at them but I won't lecture the people who flush a fifty annually at the "cost club" stores to have the "privilege" of walking into the place and spend more for less. I think there are wiser choices but it's a personal choice. Just don't come crying to me about how "tough" you have it when you can't handle your money. I don't have much sympathy for them. And no respect for the ones who have used bankruptcy to supplement their income. Instead of keeping up with the Jones' lifestyle, try living below your means a bit. You'll likely be amazed at your ability to pay your own way. Most people choose to live paycheck to paycheck. Your choice and my right privilege to laugh at it. And this is the time of year I start shaking my head at the number of people whose "savings account" is the tax refund. And they spend it before they receive it and how many times does it turn out to be less than they expected?

Quilterpeg, 12 over 75 years seems way too few. I'm going to make some assumptions here - do feel free to ignore them if they don't fit the storyline. If the quiltmaking was to cover her children, I think the output would be greater, especially if she had access to a sewing machine. If she were teaching any daughters to quilt, she might have each of several daughters working on quilts at the same time, and I'd count that as greater output, too. If they (the family) had enough resources to be warm enough, and the protaganist is making quilts as a creative endeavor - well, I still think there would be more. But if it were a chore, like sweeping the floors and washing the dishes, well, 12 might be too many. How isolated is she? Many in the 1920's still got together for quilting bees, in which a the quilting on a bed-sized quilt would be completed in a day or two, with 6 or more women working on the actual quilting. That could lead to greater productivity as well. One would piece the quilt in the evenings, then get together with neighbors for the quilting. So is the quilting a bonding experience to share with other? Like I said, it will depend greatly on the motives of the woman. I'd really like to here more about the story. Oh, and with all the modern equipment, a very simple pattern, and absolutely no distractions, I can complete a double bed quilt in about 1.5 weeks. But I usually choose complicated patterns, so it takes longer.

Laundry Mich - thank you! We have had issues with this machine since we got it in Dec. 2016. I think the circuit board was replaced twice. Finally it started working. We have had other intermittent issues with it leaking. I should have mentioned it's a front-loader. In this model, the bleach / fabric softener dispenser drains to a hose which leads to the drum. If it overflows, it goes right underneath the machine - which is what it was doing before I figured it out (I though a drain hose at the bottom was leaking. Here is a picture - excuse the mess. You can see it's full of water. You can also see how the outer edge is low since the piece that holds up to the side broke. Here is a picture from the top with the cover off. The hose at the right is the one that drains from the dispenser (bottom of pic) to the drum. Thanks!

Count the blooms on your established ramblers and repeat flowering rambling types. Flower size of an inch and a quarter with semi-single flowers doesn't make it all that difficult to achieve five thousand flowers in a year. Not to disparage Ann's breeding efforts as she is a gifted breeder and a very nice lady, but you will be surprised by just how many small flowers some of these things can pump out annually once established. And, you do realize just how large a plant is required to produce that quantity of flowers? Kim

Kim, those of us with OGR's are used to having roses that take up a lot of space. Some of mine get huge, and I can think of about 3 more that I'd have if I had the space for them. I've had to downsize my thinking about size so I can have more plants, but I'd make an exception for this one.

Mmmm, I have a particular weakness for Lens HMs but so true - many of them get enormous (I an thinking specifically of a huge Pleine De Grace here which I had to sneakily relocate in a corner of our local graveyard, after it threatened to take over my entire allotment, in one year).
Even more disturbing (to me) is a feeling that I have seen it all before. Not sure whether this is a response to the impending move from sunny allotment to shady woodland, but am finding it really hard to crave other roses since I feel that, with the 100ish ones I have, I have already covered most of the bases, in regard to colour, shape, scent and overall impression. So, I am looking at Jean Stephanne and thinking, very nice but I already have a decent selection of pale pinkish HMs so why get another (when there are many, many woodlanders just waiting for my seed orders).
Cannot decide whether this is just a passing winter ennui or a grown-up decision that I would just be going into collector mode (or worse, shopping frenzy - a disaster as we are broke).
Either way, it feels surprisingly serene and Zen-like (a rare sensation for me).

I'm sure that is a perfectly lovely hybrid, but the statement that it produces up to 5000 blooms a year can hardly be regarded as unique. I mean, I am certain that my 8 by 8 foot 'Darlow's Enigma' easily exceeds that number. Ahhh, marketing! Gotta love it.

That is a pretty thing; I love that kind of landscape shrub. And I love looking at winners of various rose trials too; thanks for pointing this one out.

The thing is, though, it looks like 'Aptos' to me. I wonder if 'Aptos' was ever considered for the International Trials for landscape shrubs?

And in warmer climates than mine, I think 'Aptos' has more petals and a more apricot color. It blooms all summer and is very disease resistant up here. It has never bspotted for me. I do love it! I think it is a first class landscape shrub too and easily available as well.

Gean's right about Aptos. And Darlow's Enigma, when permitted his head, pumps out bazillians of flowers year round in benign climates. Cass Bernstein sent me photos she took of my Too Cute in her garden a few years ago. I'm not saying it's five thousand blooms, but when you have smaller shrubs pumping out the flowers in masses like this repeatedly throughout the season, you can see where very high flower counts can easily be amassed. Yes, I understand that it is not unique. Understood that at first glimpse of the photo. I thought it might be nice to introduce/explore the hybrid musks for a fresh topic, for those that do not grow them, and for those that might be completely unfamiliar. And that seems to be happening.

I am not endorsing the rose - I have no personal experience with it, but awards speak for themselves.

Aptos is lovely IMHO.

HMs have always had my vote - along with wildlings, they are the most favoured and common class in my garden.
