The first one looks like it could be Photinia serrulata and the second one looks like an evergreen azalea (of asian origin).

Now called P. serratifolia. The azalea looks like a type that may be expected to have orange or coral pink flowers. Try getting a variety name when it flowers, if interested. Maybe take a flowering sprig, with plenty of leaves to some local outlets.

Or, esh_ga, could this flush of new, red spring growth be found on that other Far Eastern invader _Photinia glabra_, the Japanese Photinia, which Wade T. Batson describes in _Landscape Plants for the Southeast_ as having "2-4 inch long leaves that are conspicuously red when young" (p. 274)? I tend to agree with you that it's _Photinia serrulata_ because of the obviously serrate leaves; however, I think the leaves of _Photinia glabra_ are also serrated. Both forms have fetid flowers followed by attractive red fruit. And, regrettably, the two invaders are responsible for that horror of an offspring--the Red Tip Photinia.

P. glabra does not have such long leaves, they are more ovate in shape. The crossing of the two produced the intermediate size and shape of Fraser photinia. The sawtooth leaf margins of P. serratifolia are not seen in P. glabra or the hybrid.

We had a powerful storm the other night, and these flowers really took a beating. Thankfully there were a few good blooms left when I stopped by my sister's place yesterday afternoon.

I had two of those in my house in Sacto, was never able to key it out. Some breeders released azaleas pre-WWII and the progeny was lost, I was unable to find them at UCD library (this is not to say someone doesn't know them). I loved that plant. I have fotos somewhere & if I remember after vacation & can fix my website I'll scan and link. Also agree with the Photinia serrulata, altho on my second glass of Shiraz.
