High temps and pond temps....

Even up here in the Great North we've been having a run of high temps. Even worse in other areas of the country from what I've been seeing. How have these high temps been effecting other ponds and the fish and what have people been doing to adapt? My pond has been running 76.8 +/- and I've been pumping fresh water in to try and drop the timp but not very effectivly. I have lost fish and been attributing this partialy to the higher water temps (water added after fish loss). How does this compare to other areas?

high temps are okay is what my pond guru told me. My pond is around 75 F but on hot days can shoot up to 90 F. he said it's fine. I added an air pump to increase oxygen levels. no need to constantly change water. plus this time of year it's very hard to drop the temperature and Ph. the Ph level may be high this time of year, but once again, nothing to worry about. part of the seasonal pond cycle.

as far as the fish lost, the constant change of water will cause stress. my fish are fine with the high Ph and temps. I add a large ice cube I froze from a bowl to cool it a little when it reaches around 90 F., but all my plants and fish are fine.

What kind of fish?

My ponds are 5'x5'x28" and 6'x4'x18". I haven't checked the water temp and they only get full sun from noon to 4pm, but I haven't lost any fish (comets, shubunkins and goldfish).
I have about 60% surface coverage with lilies and WH, etc and lots of submerged oxygenators, and the fish stay in the shade during the day but are very active in the mornings and evenings. I've been topping off the water lost to evaporation - about 3" a week, and let it run over for ~ 10 minutes. But that's it so far. The fish are eating and spawning so I think they're doing ok.

Where are you in MN? I'm in west central - very dry here, but supposed to get cooler for the next week - now we just need RAIN!

Interesting Stuff...thanks for the responses Here is what I am facing (in Western Oregon) Yesterday... LOW 29 HIGH 45 OK, to me neither the soil temp or the air temp would be conducive to plant growth...even a cool weather crop, such as peas. Under these conditions, it was not raining but the sun didn't appear until late afternoon so things never warmed up. I have been gardening for (only) six years so my experience is limited, but my observation is that peas planted at this time do not germinate well...therefore I went to starting them in cell trays. They are my unheated greenhouse now and are growing some there. I would say yesterday's range in there was (like) 34 to 65. I don't want to go to "analysis paralysis" ...but there might be a useful quantitative number that I might use...any other thoughts welcomed

There are several different misting systems. The best for you sitution would be a Aquafog. They are rather expensive so you can make you own that works really well by running Toro misters on a water timer. These work by caputuring the hot air in the mist and exhausting it out through your exhaust fan. Read the link below for more information. The one that might cause a problem for you is a swap cooler or evaporative cooler. The pads can stay wet too long and grow algae. But that is usually because the fan is not sized right or the water flow is too fast. With the Toro misters the timer is set to come on for only a min. or two every hour. (can be adjusted to more). The water and hot air goes out with your exhausted air and evaporates. This is what I use and several others also and I don't have a problem. Mainly because I have excellent air movement. I use 50% shade cloth and sometimes lay an extra layer over certain areas. I think you need at least 50% shade cloth. I recommend Aluminet. You get the shade and heat reduction without loss of light. The light reflects back into the greenhouse. I see you are using box fans. These do not really have enough force. Also take them out of the windows and hang them from the ceiling so the air goes in a circular pattern. The best thing would be HAF (horizonial airflow fans). These are made to MOVE the air and not just for a gentle breeze. (Refer back to the sketches I posted earlier.) You greenhouse is much larger than the HF and your equipment needs to be sized accordingly. Look at my page at my list of equipment. Your only other choice is to take the plants out for the summer. I spray with Honor Guard, which is a cheaper version of Banner Maxx. It is a version of what is in Bayer Disease Control,only lasts longer - up to three weeks. I get it from Rosemania.com. It is pricey, but lasts a long time, as you only use a little of it at a time. I also use Response with it, which is a solution of seaweed, and I also use Indicate 5 - a spreader sticker. Oh, and I use Messenger, too, but spray it separately. I strongly recommend getting a chemical mask - not too expensive at one of the box stores, along with goggles. This will prevent inhaling chemicals, plus protect against what dallasguy got - a faceful! I use the mask with anything I don't want to inhale - including the organic fertilizers which have powdery ingredients like alfalfa. It is just being smart - if you smell it, you are inhaling it. I always wonder why pest control men go around spraying without masks and say that to them. Of course, they just shrug their shoulders. Also, wear long sleeves, a hat, long pants and chemical resistant gloves. I use the disposables - also at the box stores. After you spray, wash these clothes separately from the others, and, of course, take a shower. With a small garden, you can use Bayer All-in-One poured in the ground, and I know a lot of people who do it successfully. But - even when mixing that up, I would use my mask. Again - it's just common sense to me. I have a lot of hybrid teas in addition to floribundas, shrubs, minis and climbers. In the summer, their bloom size decreases, but revive in the fall with huge blooms - often into December. The floribundas bloom more in the summer and size of blooms seems the same. Anyway, growing roses in blackspot prone areas is a challenge, but the spectacular blooms and long season makes it worth it to me.

It probably depends a little on the lettuce variety, but I think root zone temperature is the more influential factor in regard to bolting. It would also depend on your hydro setup. Deep water would warm up the slowest; aeroponics the fastest.

My pond runs very cool. It is deep, slightly shaded, and about half covered with hyacinths. I think the fact that it is deeply dug into the earth limits the pond temperature considerably. I actually built a homemade solar collector to warm the water. With the collector running during the daylight hours my pond never gets over 75 degrees even during one of our hot spells, which means several days in a row of air temperatures over 100 here in southern Oregon.

I have had to limit the plant coverage (mostly hyacinths) to about 50% to get the pond to stay as warm as it does.

From my experiences I have drawn two conclusions. First, intimacy of contact with the soil is a huge factor. Ponds that sit above the ground will be warmer than one that is dug deeply into the earth. The pond can't get much warmer than the soil it sits in. Second, plant coverage can reduce pond temperatures considerably, especially with plants like hyacinths that hold their leaf surfaces out of contact with the water. The raised leaf surfaces absorb the heat without transferring it to the pond like the flat leaves of waterlilies or duckweed would.
