Where can I find mailorder Meilland roses?

I'm going nuts, not the least because so many places spell the names differently. So far I've seen Meilland, Meideland and Meidiland and if it isn't spelled exactly the way the company has entered it you get no search results. Gah!

My Mom wants a "Scarlet Meidiland" which I guess is a type of scentless (ack!) ground cover/landscape rose. If it has an alternate name, I don't know--I just can't seem to find it for sale. There's a reference to it in OldHeirloom Roses in Canada, but they don't look like they've updated their web listings since '06 and that doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

Are these just difficult to find in general? Or am I going to find them in some bigbox store? Frankly, I have never looked at groundcover roses before. What's the angle on them in comparison to something like the old fashioned short floriforous polyantha/floribunda?

Check out Helpmefind/roses for Scarlet Meidiland.

It lists all places where you can buy this rose. Not always 100% up-to-date but you will find several vendors who inded sell this rose.

"Meidiland" usually refers to the series of shrub roses or ground covers - bred by the House of Meilland - that are said to be very disease resistant. According to HMF more than 10 nurseries/vendors carry this rose. I recommend Palatine roses because they deliver huge and healthy bare roots.

I can't tell you where to buy Scarlet Meidiland, ( I purchased mine locally), but I can tell you that your mother will love it. I have two, and they are spectacular when in bloom. The first flush is awesome, with lesser blooms the rest of the summer. The foliage stays nice and green, with little or no bs. Mine have turned into huge cascading fountains. They're on top of a short retaining wall and are probably 6' tall and 8' wide. I never prune them.

I love this rose. I have it growing in pretty difficult conditions. Dry soil(under a 100 year old oak)hot afternoon sun right by asphalt pavement and it is doing great. Since it is away from the house I sometimes forget about it and it doesn't seem to mind. Blooms are very sweet and come in clusters. If you can't find it I would be glad to send you cuttings.

Perma: Yes, an antique rose is much more than just a rose. It's history, it's romance, it's beauty, it's fragrance, it's science, it's life, it's culture, it's poetry, it's magic. It's a reason to get out of bed in the morning--to look around excitedly to see what bloomed. Like you this is basically my only indulgence. I've been frugal by necessity for decades. This is really the only thing I've done for myself and I don't feel guilty for spending the money. What's stopping me now is I have no sunny space left to put them and I am really pushing it on shade tolerance with many of them already. Ingrid: I agree. I think the future will be worse than those forecasts. Jin: Yes, with money just about anything in the garden is possible. I could spend thousands easily in the garden. Every year! I want to fix my paths and get some flowering plants that are shade tolerant. Maybe a bunch of encore azaleas for starters. I'm eventually going to have to shift my focus to shade gardening because for every square foot of sun I have about 200 square feet in shade. I really wish I could get as worked up over shade plants as I am for antique roses. As an aside, my crape myrtles are all blooming now and they are really beautiful but they do not make my heart go pitter patter like my roses do.

I've always pronounced it the correct way...my husband is a native French speaker (from Quebec) and he's always correcting my bad pronunciation :)) We also have a French last name that is perpetually mispronounced here in America. You should see my husband try to order an omelette at a diner...it's hilarious! No one has a clue what he's asking for. I have to say it the "American way" so they know what he wants. Personally, I find French hard to understand! When I went to Norway, I understood that language much better. Go figure.

Finally I can put my little Grey Pearl to rest without believing I am to blame. I'm stll sad though. Blue for You can be decidedly gray at times and is moderately healthy and hardy here. Gets BS without fungicide but survises without it. PIcture below shows more of the warm tone, cool temps bring out the blue.

Carol's comment about not pruning her scarlet Meidiland brings up a question I have. I'm growing a low hedge of about six ruby Meidiland roses, and I've usually pruned them to about 18" canes each spring. I had read before that any cutting should be done all the way to the ground, but I just didn't trust that I should really cut them that hard.

I've read recently that they can do fine with no pruning at all -- is that 100% true? Or will they flower better if they have more new wood by cutting off last year's long canes? I have to say mine have flowered quite well with regular pruning. Here's a photo from last July. They have a fairly long bloom season in early-mid summer.

I suggest looking for local stores that sell Star Roses. I've seen Star roses in paper boxes at the local Shaws grocery store, but I prefer to buy Star Roses from Comstock Ferre, a local nursery, as potted plants.

I got my Scarlet Meidiland from Parks Seed last season. I haven't looked for it yet this season, so I don't know if they have it again. It was late in the season for planting bareroot last year, and we had the awful drought, but it's taking off this season.
