Mystery plant, zone 9, growing in compost

I am in zone 9 of Louisiana, and do not toss weeds into my compost, only grass, leaves, paper and kitchen scraps. I have a plant shooting up from my compost heap which I took a picture of, but it's too big to post here, so here's the description. The single leaf is shooting up from a round, smooth green stem. It stands about 13 inches tall now. The leaf is heart-shaped and the stem is connected at the cleft. I believe it's called cordate. The outer edge is smooth and even and is dark green, while the center is white to light green, with just a tinge of red where the stem connects. The veins are pinnate, or paired evenly and opposite each other and do not arc. Is this a volunteer elephant ear, or some kind of vegetable? If it is an elephant ear, what would be it's value in a permaculture type setting? Any help appreciated.
