Water Lily For Small Pond

Hello everyone,

We have just put in a small pond. Probably about 700 gal. The dimensions are approximately 7'X8' at the widest. Kidney shaped.

I'd love to have a water lily, but need it to be for a small pond, and also one that takes our coastal conditions in northern California. I love the looks of "Barbara Dobbins" and "Peace Lily" so tend to like the more subtle shades of pinks and salmons.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

If you're looking for smaller lilies, the auroa is a nice changeable lily that is 'medium' sized and is around those shades. Helvola is a great small lily, but has bright yellow small blooms. If you're okay with a larger tropical the Albert Greenburg is a beautiful lily, I've heard 'autumn' colored as the best description. It may need trimming to fit well, at least a nice color option. Clyde Ikins and Peach Glow are also a possibility, but are medium to large sized lilies.

Thanks watershaper for your suggestions. I'll look these up. We're right on the ocean and our conditions are always cool so I'm told some lilies don't do well in our area. Course finding them will be another adventure.

The lilies will grow fine in 42" water. As Gary mentioned if they are newly acquired and already have leaves on them raise them up and then lower gradually. Put them on the bottom for the winter and leave them there next spring. They will reach the top and do fine. Of course there is no problem with keeping them closer to the surface if you want. It's just a matter of choice. It may be easier to maintain them (prune and remove old blooms and dying leaves) if they are closer to the surface.

Restocking Very Small Pond With Water Lilies

I have a small (about 20 gallons) ceramic pot with fish and blooming water lillies. Before I started I went to the web to get advice and found conflicting information. What works for me is very small fish (actually Endlers livebearers about 1 inch long) and one of the smaller species of white water lillies. The small fish prevent any insect problems and provide the nutrients for the water lilys. I neither feed the fish nor fertilize the lillies. The lillies are planted in plain clay soil (comes in a 1 cubic foot bag at Home Depot called topsoil) in a standard plastic pot about 6 inches square and 4 inches deep. Any soil that sinks will work fine. I have tried potting soil and most of it floats and sand packs to tightly. The location needs at least 2 hours a day of sun to bet my species of lilly to bloom but 4 is better. I average about three blooms per day all year long. All I add is water when the rain is not sufficient. The water is clear and there is no aeration.

You will most likely have difficulties with tropical lilies with your cool temps. I would stick with hardy varieties.
Aurora and Souix are small lilies but they can be slightly fussy bloomers. I highly recommend Paul Harriot for a small lily. It is a very good bloomer. Rubra is another good small lily with small red blooms. One of my favorite hardy lilies is Mangkala Ubol. It would be a good size for your pond and has gorgeous large blooms once established.

Chrysantha is a much better bloomer than Aurora and is a nice peach color.

Perry's Baby Red is bigger but a great bloomer with hot pink flowers.

Joanne Pring is a nice small pink.

Thanks byorsell888, I'll look at the Chrysantha. I think I'd like the peach/salmon colors the best. Have a hot pink in the other pond.
