I've heard of birds carrying frog and fish eggs. Don't know about goldfish though!

My 300 gallon stocktank is too small for just my 2 lilies! I'm thinking of giving them both their own tanks next year.

Your tank and blooms look wonderful. I also started out with WM lilies. And yes you do need another tank...one is never enough.

Just an idea about the baby fish. I'm always dipping water out of the big tank to pour into a tub garden...later babies. Must be eggs or fry in the water.

Yes, Mammasue! THAT's what I mean! I'm clipping that for DH (who isn't going to mind a bit, so long as we never speak of dollars!)
I expect you're right about me moving eggs myself either in water or possibly a sprig of anacharis - now that I think of it.
Catherine, you only have lilies in one of your tanks? How many lotus tanks are you up to now? Any blooms yet?

I've heard frogs since we got a dumping of rain over the weekend. I don't know what they are but I'm hoping they've moved in. The branch is waiting!
And 2 more lilies bloomed today - I've got 5 at once. Woo-hoo!

Your lily ponds are wonderful. I don't have room for more than my little pond, oh, yeah, and one I sort of snuck in (hahaha) but keep hinting at that BIG side yard that has nothing but grass!!!

Mammasue.........wow......is that yellow lily just in one container? That's alot of blossoms! My Sulphurea isn't doing well this year.....only about 3-4 blossoms all seasons. How often do you fertilize?
Vanessa......I have 2 tropicals in a tank, a lotus and a tropical in another, 2 hardy lilies in another, and then my lotus bog. I have another lotus in a 35 gallon tank.....but it hasn't blossomed yet (American).
The Mrs. Perry D. Slocum has had about 3 blossoms, and the Egyptian lotus in the bog is getting ready to blossom.
The 2 waterlilies in the one stocktank (300 gallon), are so crowded, the leaves are piling up on each other.
I HATE japanese beetles! They are decimating my Thalia and my pickerill rush, and spend their days in my lotus blossoms......which makes them not so pretty to look at!

You can remove extra lily pads if they crowd each other. I do it all summer long in my little lily ponds.

How far back do you cut the stems, buyorsell?

Gosh those stock tanks look easier to set up then a pre-formed pond. How much do they usually run for and where do you get them? Is the metal ever a problem?

Do a search on this forum for stocktanks and you'll find some good threads on it.
some of us have metal ones and some have poly tanks (like Rubbermaid).
Usually you can find either at a farm store, like Tractor Supply.
I think the metal can rust, but it takes awhile.
My 300 gallon Rubbermaid tanks cost about $179-$200.
If you live in a warm zone, you can leave it up all year round, but in zone 5, where I live, I have to empty them out and turn them upside down in the winters. I tried leaving some out and they froze solid and cracked.
I love stocktank watergardens! You don't have to dig a hole, plus they are alot closer to you, to see things better.
And they're nice if you're renting your home, since you don't dig a hole.

I have both poly and galvanized tanks and I love them all. Freeland brand polys are a smidge cheaper, maybe $150 for a 300ga, and just as good quality in my opinion.

I have GOT to stop buying lilies! I have 8 now and that's after I just gave 2 away to a newbie friend LOL!

I'm going to look for a poly one to expand my little shade tub garden. And I need another one for the lotus. And another one for tropicals (I forgot about your tropicals, Catherine!) and also for the plants that the fish find too tasty. Above ground is the way to go for me. I can get nose to nose with my babies plus the neighbor dogs can't get in to take a swim. I expect I'll have to drain the smaller ones but my 8 foot can be the winter home for most of the plants.

I am going to have to prune off some pads, though. The poor fishies can't find me when I bring the food but I just hate to pinch off a perfectly beautiful pad! The fish think it's neat when I get my arm all the way in there to pinch them off, though. Fish manicure! I've got a nice pad drying between some weighted boards like you dry flowers but it seems a little juicy to work. Anyone try that?

Oh, Goldtrap, mine's only been up since last summer but no problems with the metal yet. The ranchers here leave them out for years with out a problem so I don't see why we can't.
