why won't it bloom???

I have a flowering quince that I dug up 3 Springs ago from my mother-in-law's yard. It had bloomed that year for her. As of yet there has not been a single flower, just nice pretty leaves. It's in a mostly sunny area, and it's watered the same as my other plants around it (mini rose, hydrangeas, bulbs).

Any idea why it won't bloom??

define mostly sunny as compared to full sun?

the first thing i always consider when flowers don't happen is lack of sun .. and then improper fertilization ... too much green at the sacrifice of flower could mean too much nitro .... as in lawn fert or manure that is to fresh ....

---->>> agree or disagree??? IMHO .... we cause more harm than good with too much love .. hence the suggestion that fertilizer could have a negative impact ...

don't be embarrassed ... i have my quince in pure sand.. and absolute full alll day long sun ... and it gets no food .. and hasn't gotten watered since its first summer ... i was recently beating it back with a stick [actually the pruners] ... before i realized i should have pruned it after the flower show.. but hey ... i do it when i walk by and notice.. or it will never get done ...

PS: but the other side of the fert issue is if something is lacking in the soil .... i cant remember my N-P-K right now ... first number is nitro for greenery .. like a lawn ... second is maybe flowers .. third roots [or two and three vice versa] .. in a VERY generalized manner .... perhaps you have potassium deficiency if i have my numbers right.. and i will defer if corrected .... anything else not bloom properly ..

perhaps a soil test will help you define the problem ....

Yes I mean Joseph's Coat and Jacob's Robe sorry. I have 2 Joseph's Coat and one Jacob's Robe. Out of the two Joseph's only one is blooming and its maybe 1-1/2 to 2 feet away from the one that's not performing. The Jacob's Robe is 10 feet away on the same side of the flower bed as the other two. They were all planted 2 years ago only a few weeks apart from each other. I know the non-performing Joseph's coat was the first and then I purchased the second a few weeks after and much later the Jacob's Robe which was quite well established when it arrived, blooming even. The weather here in NY has been warm in the day with cool evenings, I live by the ocean so its a little cooler than other parts of Queens, maybe temps between 50's and 60's. The three were purchased from different nurseries if that means anything but they all have excellent reputations (Josephs coat from Brushwood, the blooming one and Jacobs Robe from Stargazer Perennial). At first I wanted to blame it on age since roses from Stargazer tend to be more well established and sent in one gallon pots compared to Brushwood but this cannot be the issue since the Jacob's Robe is also having the same issue. The buds are so small on these two compared to the other that I am now wondering if they aren't ill or something. My Winchester Cathedral has one rose blooming and I'm sure the other's will follow suit since they seem more ready than my two reticent climbers. Its so annoying since I have the two Joseph's trained into an arch and now only one half is blooming.

Have you fertilized them? Also, did you plant them 1ft deep, or is the soil 1ft. deep? Your daytime temps will determine how fast they grow. I planted mine in the spring and three varieties are just now starting to send up blooms. Two others probably won't bloom until August. We had a long cool spring and we're just now getting warm weather. I've seen a huge difference in my plants the last 2 weeks.

Bill - both of the plants you mentioned do not bloom until well established . Some garlic chives need a year or more before they feel settled in and happy . Yarrow is the same . Give it time -- lots of time . Both plants do well if neglected . They do not like too much of anything although easily tolerate recent rains . Both my yarrow and garlic chives are currently blooming but not as much as before the rains and heat came . Many trees and plants are just not happy or ready to bloom until well established . For some like my grapefruit tree - it took 10 years ! Kara - the white yarrow you have that is blooming is from me . Bill - keep the yarrow . You'll fall in love with it this winter when all else looks terrible and the yarrow has gorgeous feathery bright green leaves and is blooming away .

When she bought it the flower was already formed in the rhizome. That was the 1st year bloom. If it is a tall bearded, zone 4 is not as friendly a climate as it is to dwarf beardeds. The growing season is short so good soil, good drainage, & full sun are mandatory. Has she planted it with the top of the rhizome exposed? Have any babies been produced? If so there's a chance another year of healthly growth will produce a flower in the rhizome. Tell her to not trim off green leaves when they begin to flop in summer. The last resort is to find TB's that have proved they can take zone 4 winters. Does she know its name or who hybridized it?

I had a flowering Quince right off my side door in Portland, OR and it was both crowded from Camellia's and the distance between our home and the neighbor's home. From the north end of our home it was maybe 7 feet away, in a large vase-shape, and it bloomed so heavily I still remember it.

I would tend to think that given time for you, it will bloom. Right now it is setting it's anchor's. Just give it time. I've had this happen with other shrubs as well. It's sort of common, but we just never know when and where it will take place.

Unless your tree is getting run-off from yours or a neighbor's nitrogen-overfertilized grass, I would agree with Dax that it will just take time for your tree to acclimatize to its new home and flower.

However, while it is setting its anchors, i am not opposed to providing it with the right nutrients to help it along, especially if there is some unknown deficiency in your soil. i fertilize all my ornamental trees each spring with an organic slow release fertilizer. what i learned about N-P-K: Nitrogen(N) Phosphate(P) Potassium(K). Nitrogen promotes leaves. Phosphate promotes blooms and Potassium promotes vigor and disease resistence. my best suggestion is treetone - an organic fertilizer appropriate for flowering trees. It also has trace minerals like Magnesium Zinc etc necessary for good plant growth. you can find it in most gardening centers..
