Bareroot Rouge Valley order....and a monster!!!

Well, its "welcome to 2013 rose season" for me :) yeah!!!! I love this time each year when RVR offers their 1 & 5 gallon roses bareroot! They are always HUGE and healthy, and this year was no exception!

This year I ordered Corylus, R. Pendulina, and Blushing Lucy in 1 gallon pots (plus 8 bands tagged along for the ride). This picture of Corylus, in the 3g container I transferred it into, is exactly why I order bareroots from them (not to mention they're ownroot and already large and established). This is how large it was when it arrived in the mail today...over 5ft tall...healthy...ready to go in the ground next month! They had to bend the longest canes to even fit it into the box :)

Can't wait for more of my orders to arrive from the other nurseries! Bring on Spring!!!!

Good for you! The vendors from whom I bought my own-root baroots mostly cut the tops off probably for the ease of shipping and handling. I have never bought from RVR and did not even know they offer bareroot ownroots, and now I am tempted... :)

Mark, they only offer them January and February, but you still have time :) FYI...that huge Corylus was only $15.25!!!!

Got a bunch this year. Nor'east - 3 different orders all in top shape and growing like crazy. Almost Heaven - picked up 3 mini at our district meeting, roses are equal to Nor'east quality. Rogue Valley - 2 very small bands but looking at them now you would not know it. (JJ is over 3ft tall). Vintage - a good friend sent me one. It is a large 2nd yr HM rose that was still in a band pot....once potted into a bigger pot it took off, I just planted it in the ground. Roses Unlimited - good healthy 1gal container rose. Now repotted in a 5gal container. Ashdown Roses - got a bunch from them. All very healthy plants in band pots. I potted all into 1 gal pots to let them grow on. Last weekend the 2 HMs were planted in the ground and and the others are in 5gal pots and all have taken off growing and blooming like crazy. Euro Desert Roses - 2 very healthy plants in bands. Bukavu is in the ground and Diablo is still in 5 gal container (for now). I have been very please with everyone I ordered from. The majority of my roses that are in 5 gal pots are going to stay in containers and will graduate into bigger pots this fall.

Yes, with walk-in retail outlets in particular there may be little point in saying anything, as they are often not even the originator of the error. You'd like to do your part to see improvements made, but often irrelevant responses - if not outright arguments - are to be expected. Kind of like here on Garden Web. Paraphrased examples of comebacks I've gotten: "We've had as many people come in here and say it was the other as say it was was that" "We don't want to say anything that could offend the grower, they'll get mad and cut us off" and of course the favorite retort that has also been used on this site multiple times: "We got it from so and so and therefore it must be right" All going back to the people you are trying to tip off not knowing what they have. In the first instance all the manager being talked to had to do was just once crack a book and see that the one it was supposed to be was pink, instead of the orange red they were displaying under the name. Why the people (like me) pointing out (correctly) that it was not the pink one were (supposedly) countered by a more or less equal number of others saying the orange red one they had was correct I cannot explain. Unless a bunch of people had bought the same stock under the wrong name elsewhere, were using that as a basis for their erroneous statements. Nevermind that the cultivar even had "Pink" in the name.

Tom: I am not familiar with red pine in your area. Here in northern VA red pine is not an option. In Garrett county MD they are planted for pulpwood, but have problems with beetles and annosus root rot disease after 30 years or so, and no one is keeping any to grow for timber. In my pine plantings, a few of my red pine are beginning to die. I have been very careful to treat all the stumps of any I cut to keep annosus out, so I am not sure what the cause of the mortality is. I haven't confirmed anything. I keep the trees thinned out so they are vigorous, and should resist beetle attacks. I see evidence of beetles, but I am not sure if they are primary or secondary contributors to death. So, in the area of my timberland I would not recommend planting red pine. But your area may be different. You already have native white pine, and I love those. If I were starting over at my timberland with plantings, I would do larch Norway spruce, and white pine as the main species. Does your forester have any recommendations about the red pine? Has he talked about any risks? In my pine plantings, the Norway spruce, the white pine, and the red pine do well together. The Norway spruce started a bit slower than the red and white pines, but they got going fast enough so that they grow up with them well. With the red pine, I was afraid they would be outstripped by the white pine and Norway spruce, but that has not been a problem. The Norway spruce and the white pine are growing faster, and will eventually be much taller, but after about 40 years, they are still compatable. Of course, you can plant them in seperate blocks, or mix them. I would do some of both kinds of plantings. One consideration with the red pine--the trees don't assert dominance in a stand very readily, which means they need artificial thinning to maintain a healthy stand. Norway spruce will sort themselves out very, very readily, with the stronger trees overtopping, and eventually supressing the less vigorous trees, so they don't NEED thinning. I thin mine to enhance growth a bit, and make the stand prettier, but after 200 years, unthinned NS stands will be just as fine as stands that were thinned. The same is true of white pine, but in my experience, the best trees don't assert dominance quite as readily. As for larch, I just don't know. My guess is that they will be like white pine or NS in this regard, but I don't know that for a fact. So, my bias here is to plant much more white pine than red pine, but I am sure that red pine, which I assume is native there, is for you a much better bet than for me here. Some say red pine is native to the area of my timberland, but I really don't agree. There IS an outlier of native red pine in one spot in WV, but for me that doesn't qualify it as native to Garrett County MD or other places where a naturally growing one has never been seen. As for your not focusing on planting tamarack, I agree. The native species are not always best. We have native red spruce in Garrett county, but they are far inferior to Norway spruce--no contest. But if you have a very wet area, go with tamarack. They are short lived compared to other larches, but occasionally some have lived well over 200 years. As for NS seed source--boy, this is tough. I wish I could see your seedlings from Itasca. If some of them are growing very, very fast--that's something! You may not be able to do better. But, are some growing very, very much faster than others? Are there a fair number of "runts." If so, that could indicate that some of the seed is coming from trees not cross polinated. Two possible solutions: you can either plant them at tighter spacings to give you more trees, and thus more really fast growing ones. Or you can try to mix in seedlings from another seed source. The Musser may be a good choice, but, what performs well for me here might not do so well there. Also, You should check and see if Musser has made any changes in the seed they use in the last 6 years or so. If so, I know nothing about what they might be offering now. One thing surprized me a bit with my NS here. The finest strain I have seen in the higher elevations in the Appalachians was a stand planted near Glady, WV. I dug up some seedlings and planted them at my timberland. I since dug three of those up again and planted them here in the hot and dry northern Shenandoah Valley. I am stunned by their performance here--all three rank as the best of those I have planted here, with the understanding that most of the 400 or so I have planted here are too small to really evaluate yet. But that that strain does so well in the cool wet mountain environment, AND down here, has surprised me. Unfortunately the stand near Glady was cut three years ago--a real shame! I am not sure what you should make of all I am telling you here, but NS is a remarkable species in its variation and adapability. Well, keep me posed on your plans and progress. Suggestions for best continuous bloom rose?

Aaron, some of my roses do bloom in part shade, including Rouge Royale. I've found no difference in any blooms frying here, whether the rose grows in part shade or full sun. It's a desert here and the air is very dry. This does as much damage as sun and heat, making almost all roses quickly crunchy. We have been in a continuous heat wave since June 9, and no rose will do well in that, whether in shade or not. I wish the roses wouldn't even try to bloom when it gets so hot and dry. We had no rain for almost three months until a few days ago, and finally, we got one night of rain. No more since. Today, finally, we drop into the 80s. For a few days, then it goes back up, which I hope proves incorrect. I've grown Jude the Obscure (huge) for 17 years, and while it is an exquisite, unique rose, I don't find that it reblooms well, certainly not like Munstead Wood, so I hope you eventually do acquire Munstead Wood. Other great bloomers for me, which I've probably already mentioned (sorry) are Julia Child, of course, Tamora, Golden Celebration, Boscobel, Love Song, and good bloomers, Rouge Royale, Augusta Luise, Ebb Tide, Twilight Zone, Bernstein-Rose, Ballerina, and who did I miss--ha? You will have fun, if you find him, with the challenging Prince, which slogged along for years, and produced nice blooms, when it felt like it, on a pretty little bush. After The Prince's third transplant, it perked up, liked the place, and began a slow "expansion", which exploded about three years ago, when The Prince put pedal to the metal, blooming almost nonstop. The blooms even got darker. This rose has gotten so big that I'm wondering if it has gone own root, or what other major factor has caused such a transformation. Diane

Alrighty then. If my RVR Corylus doesn't measure up---actually I bought two. That is so generous. A very good buy. My order is coming for some time. Did you get that greenhouse up?

You'll have to let me know, Susan! I was so happy with it! Last year I got a beautiful Marianne bareroot from them...and I know I got another one at the same time, I just can't remember which it was.

As for the greenhouse: the window panels made it out of my car last night and into the garage...its a start. My husband keeps saying he'll help me put it together in the spring, but I have different plans as for when it gets assembled; I'm thinking before the end of February...even if I have to do it myself!! He was looking at the picture on the box with a weird look on his face. I guess when I said I had bought a greenhouse, he thought I meant another one of those zipper greenhouses LOL!

Holy Moley! That thing is huge! I ordered some own root roses from them (didn't have them in containers though) and they were shipped this week. I was hoping I would get them last night but I hope today is the day! I have never ordered from them before, so I am curious as to how big they will be. I am hoping they are bigger than the "twig" I am expecting.

I rec'd my second box today from RVR (it got seperated fromt eh first box during shipping), and Blushing Lucy is just as big! They had even written on the box to be careful when I open it because the canes could pop out!

Even my dogs can't figure out what it is...or maybe why its in the house :)

I googled Rouge Valley Roses and got Rogue Valley. Is this the same company and when I call, just what do I ask for. Are these roses going to be happy in Zone 5A when they are raised in Oregon? Really interested. I would appreciate some help on this as you said this is only offered in January and February. Thanks for your help Barb

Okay -- I've waited a long, long time to complain about this, hoping that things would straighten out. It's apparent that they're not going to. It's ROGUE Valley guys (as in maverick) -- not ROUGE (as in a cosmetic, or the French word for red). I'm hoping the repeat offenders will not take umbrage if I ask them to try to quit transposing the U and the G.

In earlier years, I spent much wonderful time with my paternal grandparents in Oregon's Rogue River valley. In 2011, I was able to fulfill a long-standing dream of taking a whitewater rafting trip down the Rogue River. It's a very special place, and certainly merits a correct ID.

Kindly pardon my rant. Pet peeves sometimes just drive one to the breaking point and take control. Yaknowaddamean?

Barb, sorry I forgot to answer your question. Yes, the website is www.roguevalleyroses.com. They are absolutely wonderful to deal with. When you first go to the website there is a link on the left-hand side of the page that says "gallon list." If you click on that, you'll see all of the plants that they offer in one gallon sizes. Of the three that I ordered this year, two were huge, and the third was still quite large. After you order, and receive your order comfirmation, just reply to that message that you would like them shipped bareroot.

I think both of these would do fine in your zone. Blushing Lucy is hardy to 4a and although Corylus doesn't have a hardiness listed on HMF (helpmefind.com: a great resource in looking up rose info), based on it's breeding, you should be fine :) Hope this helps!

I purchased a Felicity hybrid musk rose from Rogue Valley roses a few years ago and it was huge and well established.

I was particularly delighted because I had tried twice to grow a Felicity from younger, less established bands and both times it died during the winter.

The rose I got from Rogue Valley is still growing strong after several years.

I love the name.. Does anyone know where the name of the Rogue River came from? Were there desperadoes in the area when the river was named?

Lois: No, there were no marauding desperadoes -- only (initially) peaceful folks who had every right to be there. 'Rogue', in this instance, is a very loose translation of the French word 'coquin'. A more accurate translation might be something like 'mischievous person', 'scamp', 'rascal ', 'jokester'. . . At any rate, French explorers employed the terms 'coquin' (male) and 'coquine' (female) in referring to the native peoples they encountered in the region. The somewhat crude translation was applied early-on by the first American explorers to reach the area.

My order from Rogue is great. However, I ordered gallons being shipped bareroot. The bands are coming later. My two Corylus were huge (and root bound--poor things). I also received Nuits de Young, Orpheline de Juliet, Tuscany Superb, Chinatown, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer...I potted them up into bigger pots as the construction here is STILL going on.
Next week comes my S and W bare roots and they will go into the ground.
I learned to stagger my deliveries. HA!

Wow that's so good to know. I ordered six full price bare roots from two fairly famous California mail order nurseries last year and they were a disaster. One vendor had cut off almost all the roots on the three roses in order to stuff them in a square box. Only one of those made it. Except for Roses Unlimited I just skipped mail order this year. Next year it's Rogue for me. I need bigger starter roses. I'm not getting any younger. Maybe I'll buy another Rouge Royale and some OGR's. Great to see the real deal in those pictures. Mary
