Siberian weeping pea shrub

Hello, I was recently informed that my siberian weeping pea shrub wold not propogate true to type because it is a root graft. I have been trying to find this online but I cant find information about this. Does anyone know were I can read about this i would really like to learn about the grafting that makes it a weeping shrub.

I am rooting cuttings from it anyways becase even the original upright is really a pretty shrub.

If it is a grafted hybrid/cultivar/sport/whatever there is no guarantee it will come true. You will have to do the propagation thing and grow out the seeds to find the one you want.

If you don't want to plant out 16-32-64 cells, you'll have to propagate asexually if there is no plant patent. If there is a patent, asexual propagation is prohibited by law.

I have no idea what all that means I am just interested in learning about the root graft I was told this shrub has. Was hoping some one might know of a website I could look at. I have not been able to find anything that even says this is a graft.

"watered occasionally" tells the story right there. Until the roots have grown out of the root ball/shape from the pot they were growing in and can get moisture from the surrounding soil, they need to be watered, just as they were in the nursery where you got it - probably daily, maybe more often. Roots will grow fast, IF WATERED, but you need to give them a chance to acclimate to their new life in the ground. Plants need the equivalent of an inch of rain for the first 2 years or so of almost all trees and shrubs. I would water well, a really long slow watering to really soak the root ball, rig up some shade for it if the weather is as beastly hot as it seems to be along the East Coast, and mulch around it if you haven't already done so - as widely as possible, no deeper than 4" and no mulch in the inch or so next to the trunk. Continue to water when a finger stuck into the soil - dig under the mulch to check - down to the second knuckle is dry/warm. If it is still moist, wait and check again, if dry, water slowly so the root ball is again soaked. Hope your Caragana 'Walker' recovers.

Might be buried too deeply. If it had a full canopy last year and has not been moved since then something has happened to it since. Current condition is very poor, you may end up losing it.

How about a hydrangea paniculata standard? That would compliment the hydrangea bushes you already have. Are you sure you want to plant anything in that spot with snow piling on in winter? You might have the same problem with snow breaking branches on any small bush/tree. Perhaps move tree/bush to other side? For other seasons' height you could put an obelisk there and plant a couple of type 3 clematis. Some viticellas bloom all summer/fall ie 'Madame Julia de Correvon'. 'Betty Corning' has smaller flowers with a light fragrance (rare for clematis). I cut my type 3 clematis back to the ground after foliage dies back from frost. The obelisk could be kept in place for winter sculpture or removed and replaced in the spring. Or, you could place a large ceramic container there which matches your shutter color and swap out plants for spring/summer/fall/ winter interest. Or a grouping of several pots in different sizes. Knowing what is growing in the raised bed would be helpful.

I'm not sure I'm following. The root graft has nothing to do with the seeds coming true.

You need to find out whether the plant is a hybrid/sport. That is the key question for reproduction, not what the rootstock is.

I dont really know anything about it. I was told that becaue it is a root graft that if i take cutting from it and root them that they will not grow as a weeping bush but as upright. I just got this shrub last fall and i have nev er seen it go to seed yet. I am sure it will as it is starting to flower right now. I was not interested in growing from seed I wanted to root cuttings from it.

I would think if it was a hybrid I could find that online some were.

This is sort of incorrect.

If you take a cutting from the weeping part, you'll almost certainly get a weeping plant. This is how they made the weeping plant in the first place. Just as if you take a cutting from the graft, you'll get the graft again. Whether it will remain stable is an additional issue.

This may be a hybrid, but likely it is a sport, chosen for that characteristic and asexually propagated from cuttings via grafting. I'm not sure how vigorous the cutting will be, and there is the possibility that it will not flourish (which is the reason for the graft). Some sports also revert to the parents' characteristics, which is why the cost for such plants is so high, as it takes much effort to make them stable.

Bottom line, give 'er a whirl and see what happens, don't spend too much money on material.
