Pruning Established Japanese Aralia

We recently moved into a home with two Japanese Aralias in the entry. Both are well-established and healthy. My question is about pruning. They are both growing forward with their stems more parallel than perpendicular to the ground. They look as if they should be staked but they would be leggy and the "tops" would appear as a large bunch of leaves if I did this. Is this typically how they grow??? Should I have cut them way back earlier this spring?
