I adore Crepuscule. Peachy apricot blooms, excellent growth. Or Clair Matin, a small flowered pink. Have also had good luck with Parade, a hot pink. American is a beautiful coral. Lots of good ones out there!

Judith, is Crepuscule smaller than the other tea-noisettes? I thought it would be too big for the back fence. I love it too--at ARE they have it covering the side of an outbuilding & it was just gorgeous. I have never heard of Parade, wow! I would love that deep rose against the dark woods in the background if Parade isn't too tall/stiff for such a low fence...?

I doubt that 6 hours morning sun wouldn't be enough for most roses in SE VA. Buff Beauty would look great there. Gloire de Dijon is said to be shade tolerant but again 6 hours direct sun would not even require shade tolerant roses.
Prosperity has very flexible canes and blooms a lot; it is also very healthy.

Actually, Crepuscule is a very big rose and if you get it grafted it will get big very soon.

My Crepusule is own root and got very big, very quickly.

Is your split-rail fence the sort that zig-zags? Several hybrid musks have been used to very good effect along such a fence at The Gardens of the American Rose Center in Shreveport. The sprawling growth habits of roses like Buff Beauty and Prosperity seem taylor made for such a support.

Rosyone, I wish my fence zig-zagged, that would be perfect! I forgot about Buff Bezuty which as I recall is somewhat less thorny than other HM's. BB is a candidate!
Ceterum, thanks for confirming my suspicious--some day I will have Crepuscule but not on a 4 ft tall fence. Now one more question, would Belinda be happy strung out along a low fence? Belinda was planted below the deck at the rental house we lived in our 1st year here & put on an amazing nonstop show, how could I have forgotten? Much more appealing in person that in her pix...

We have R. setigera, Queen of the Prairies, and a baby Baltimore Belle that replaced a blackspotty Geschwind's Orden on our split rail fence. The canes go one direction along the rail until the end of that run, then are bent over to run the other direction. The canes are flexible enough that they can do that. The roses are planted in the middle of 10 ft rails, and some of the canes run one way, turn and go the whole length of the rail, then turn again.

When we were shopping for the fence, the hardware store guys said that if we wanted it for animal control (we didn't) we should get the 3 rail type and back it up with chicken wire. Three rails would give a bit more space to train roses on. However, I think the real trick to gettting this to work is to select roses with very flexible, trainable canes.

I don't know about Belinda. It has a dense growth habit in my garden and doesn't have the most flexible canes among my hybrid musks. Or the longest. I think it would be a good candidate for a semi-freestanding rose, backed up against the fence.

Prosperity and Danae are also vigorous, but more flexible. They might be easier to train as climbers.

Did you consider Darlow's Enigma (constant bloom), Daybreak?

How about Cornelia or Pink Prosperity if you would like some color? Or Super Dorothy which is very pliable and is a repeat rambler? Lavender Lassie is very beautiful but I've heard it doesn't repeat terribly well. If it were me, I'd be tempted to plant Mutabilis and train it horizontally, and have a rose that is almost evergreen and virtually everblooming.

Ingrid, have heard Cornelia doesn't do well here-- but PINK Prosperity, that's a candidate. I love Super Dorothy but was afraid she would eventually overwhelm the fence!!

I'm having difficulty understanding what you're working with . . . In one of your follow-up responses above, you clarify that the 4 ft refers to the vertical dimension of your fence. But to address your question in a helpful manner, it seems to me that the really important bit of information we need is the HORIZONTAL dimension.

Growing roses effectively along a split rail fence requires a good deal of hands-on attention (training, tying, pruning)-- especially during the first few years. Personally, I think Crepuscule is a terrific subject for a split rail fence, providing the fence is long enough & assuming you're willing to invest the time to train it.

Another really effective rose on split-rails of almost any length is Cornelia. I'm very surprised that she doesn't do well in your area. That's too bad because in your zone she's a rose that would welcome the afternoon shade you describe.

I too am uncertain about the length. I also agree that ramblers are perfect for fences, if you are willing to invest the time to train them to keep them under control. I know from experience that the wichuriana ramblers are wonderful one time bloomers and have great foliage. I have a Francois Juranville that grows 60 feet (30' in each direction). However, it obliterated the fence by the third season and must be severely prunned to keep it in bounds. Alberic Barbier can be equally vigorous as well as Aviateur Bleriot, Gardenia and a host of other ramblers. One downside is that they only bloom once. The rest of the time they are just pretty, green, fast growing, lax, disease resistant canes (in my climate). City of York is a gorgeous semidouble white climber that could be lashed to a 4' fence. It is not quite as vigorous as the wichurianas, but can easily attain 25 to 30 horizontal feet. Absolutely clean foliage in our dank climate!

Cornelia is more modest in growth and can be trained horizontally. It, of course, reblooms, needs spraying, and you will probably only get 10 to 15 horizontal feet out of 1 plant. Lavender Lassie, Daybreak and Moonlight might also be strapped to a fence and give you again about 10 to 15 horizontal feet. All need spraying for fungus in my climate to have maximum foliage. Belinda wants to be a 6' X 6' shrub for me. Best, Nick

I have over 3 sections of split-rail, so easily 20 feet which is why I was thinking about those hybrid musks. Ogroses, SOMEday I'll have room for ramblers again and of your list, City of York is one of my most-admired. Silver Moon, too.
Veelakin I love Crepuscule too-- there's more sun up my the house & that's where the noisettes are. This is the last section-- I already have Night Owl, Sombreuil, SGMC, and Darlow's Enigma. Then somebody recommended Parade--- but for this spot, I favor Vanity. I'm saving this thread, so many wonderful suggestions here!!

What about climbing pinkie? Not an OGR but easy and beautiful!!
