Does anyone grow Double Delight on it's own root?

I have a very old and hand me down DD plant. I just noticed that the graft is in a vary bad shape: borers drilling holes into the graft. Is it worth it to take cuttings this spring before the plant dies or just buy a new one next year?

DD does wonderfully own root--noticably better than grafted, IMO!

Oh . . . Before I saw Becr's post I was going to encourage you to buy another grafted plant. I found DD to be slow to root and slow to develop. I eventually gave up on it as an ownroot plant. Maybe I just wasn't patient enough. After about 12 yrs, my original DD is still going strong. I wanted a couple more of them & eventually just ordered more grafted plants.

I advise giving it the royal treatment this year and see if it doesn't noticeably improve next year--it third year. Third year (or older) plants often outgrow some of their earlier "problems." As Buford suggested, give it a good afalfa feed (pellet, meal, or "tea")now and in about another month. I'd add that you should combine that with an organic feed like RoseTone (monthly until mid-August), and water it a lot. After a season of that, it should be a much improved plant by next year. Oh yes--you do have it in at least 6 hours of sun, don't you? It likes sun. And keep it healthy by spraying Bayer Advanced Garden Disease Control for Roses and Flowers, as suggested above. Good luck. Hi Michael! I was just wondering if you were still growing roses! I've had a h3ll of a few years: got Lyme disease in 2005 and then got totally phobic about being in my tick infested (deer surrounded) garden. Then the next spring gophers took out a dozen of my oldest (pre-gopher cage), largest and most beloved roses and I turned my back on them. This spring I'm trying to get a grip, though I never properly pruned, haven't fed them since last year or sprayed for almost two. Pamela's garden satisfies my need to the sheer glory of the rose, but I think I'm making friends with my own roses again, especially the ones that are doing moderately well despite utter neglect. I also have given away two dozen in five gallon pots, and shovel pruned another dozen or so. That helps, too! OK, I won't change my name, should some of the old guard still be around who might remember me. I'm still relishing the exemption from Danged Californian status you conferred on me years ago!

There's a great book I found somewhere used, paperback, years ago, called "For Love of a Rose," about the Meilland family and the development of the Peace Rose. It's such an improbable true story its quite interesting. Peace was one of the first 3 roses I ever tried to grow, as a kid in the fifth grade. I ordered them from a Sunday newspaper insert: Peace, Mr. Lincoln, and Queen Elizabeth. They all grew and bloomed despite my terrible job of preparing (or rather, failing to prepare) the planting holes. A couple years later I was in awe at seeing a gorgeous majectic specimen of a Peace rose bush growing alone prominently in the front of a yard along my school bus route. I was so impressed. It looked as if the plant had 20-25 huge blooms on it all at once. I will always have a fond impression of this rose; chalk it up to nastalgia, but it is also true that the coloring is ever variable, subtle, yet rich and beautiful, the blooms look great at every stage from bud to fully open, the blooms are quite large and last well, the stems are always thick and well-formed, and the blooms nearly always one to a stem. Cori-Ann, The Canadian nursery, Pickering Nursery (out of business for a little while now), which so many Americans, especially Northerners, loved, grafted all their roses on multiflora rootstock. Before they closed they started to sell some roses as own root. I miss Pickering Nursery, as so many others do, too. Pickering was so meticulous about their propagation methods that during grafting season they brought in expert Belgian grafters from Europe to do their grafting. These Belgian craftsmen made their grafts extremely close to where the roots came out of the rootstock (which is very hard to do...great skill is needed by the grafter to make a successful take so low down on the rootstock). When such roses were market ready they looked like own root roses. It looked like the basal/bud union area where the canes emerged, had husky anchor roots emerging from it. I marveled at their roses, looking hard to find the rootstock. With such a short rootstock, about an inch long or less, suckering is reduced. The root zone of the rose upon planting is higher up in the soil, the most aerobic, organically productive soil zone. I have gotten grafted roses where the graft was six inches up the stalk. Plant such a rose with its bud union 4" below the soil as many folks do here in the North, the rose's feeder roots emerge a foot or more below the soil surface. Actually DD roots quite easily for me. A my old house I had a hedge of DD planted along the sidewalk in my front yard. It never failed to stop passersby who smelled their wonderful fragrance. All but a few were rooted cuttings. It took a couple of years for them to become full size but once they did, they performed as well or better than graftted. All were removed and brought here and are growing well supplying me with the blooms I give to all the women, old and young, who visit. I have at least 12 bushes and all are own root and hardy. Although they dieback to the ground each winter, by late May they are blooming fools. DD remains my favorite rose!

DD grows well and blooms well for me on its own roots.

I really have to try rooting some of my roses. My DD in particular (grafted) has THE ugliest bud union. For some reason all the canes are on one side of the plant and I have to prune it so it doesn't look crooked.

I grew one on it's own roots last winter and it was HUGE by summer (still in the pot). I left it on the patio in the pot over winter - it was too big for my cold frame - hunkered against the house and it's green to the tips. I thought it might die, but it looks good so far!

One plus that comes from burying the bud union is you can't see it. Another is, each cane portion below the soil surface may root. You'll end up with an own root rose and the roots below the bud union wil be strictly anchor roots. As I dug up my roses when I moved I was able to get 3-4 bushes from many as I cut the well rooted canes away from the defunct bud union.
