String algae as mulch!

Has anyone done this?

I weeded my garden today and started with the pond. Climbed in and pulled out two buckets full of string algae! Now I have to admit.. that stuff fascinates me. It looks like it should be slimy and gross but it's almost like hair and dry when you pull it out. It's such a wonderful color that you just know it has all sorts of good nutrients. I've been wanting to find some use for it and I think I've come up with something

My mother gave me a bucket of mum cuttings with instructions to stick them in root tone and then into the ground. Keep them wet and watch them grow. Well... fine except for that last part. I didn't have anything to mulch them with and their bed is a *long* way from the garden hose. Enter the string algae. I brought the buckets down and tore a little wad and wrapped it loosely around each stem. I watered everything as much as I could (the algae was still wet with pond water too). It looks a little weird but I'm hoping it will help the cuttings stay wet and feed them too
