Help identify schrub w/ images

I have 9 of these in front of my new home. These are in full sun. I suspect they were part of the builders package and around 6 years old.

They don't seem to be doing too well. I plan to relocate them but need to better understand them first.

Looks like boxwood, Buxus sp. Boxwoods are generally pretty easy to grow and rather tolerant of less than ideal conditions. And they'll take full sun well. Get rid of the rocks and landscape fabric, do a little weeding and then apply a layer of a good organic mulch. Water as necessary through the summer and the plants should look a lot better.

I agree with gardengal's ID. We used to have some boxwoods and these look like they did.

Could be a fungus like Vladimir said, could also be an insect egg or just dirt on a bit of fluff. However, I'm more concerned with how dusty the leaves are. I may just be dust or it could be the beginnings of a spider mite infestation. It's a good idea to wash off the leaves from time to time, like maybe every 4-6 weeks. Take them outside and hose them off, or if that's not possible, put them in the shower and shower them off with cool water. Then let them drain well and put them back where they were. It helps prevent spider mites as they're attracted to dusty plants. And your plants love the rinsing off!

The main plant is a Cycas revoluta and the cycad in question is Zamia furfuracea. You may hear somewhere that this has been changed to Zamia maritima, but that name is not valid yet because it was supposed to be published with the rest of the Cycad 99 procedings, but was left out, so the new name is of yet, unpublished.

beekeeperswife, I'd recommend that you go to a high end tile store to "see" mounted tiles. You can bring a sample board back to your house to view it in your home with your cabinets/countertop. ( They sound like a gorgeous combination!) The backsplash could be any number of blends. While I think it is Veil, the squares look pretty tiny compared to mine. Oceanside has a smaller mosaic field called "Facets" = For some reason, I can't copy the page info. Go to the link below, then click on products/by collection/facets/blends and you can see "Veil" in half inch tile. I am fairly certain that it will be very pricey, quite a bit more than the Veil in the one inch tile. Other ideas: "Susan Jablon Mosaics" has "White Out!" in her "Ice is Nice" collection that it may be. http://www.susanjablonmosaics.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1205 Or, look at Hakatai "Cloud White Irridescent" http://www.hakatai.com/Cloud-White-Iridescent-P628C24.aspx I'm not sure if the reason for my choice of backsplash will help you. We did it sort of backwards - I have purchased what I like that is high quality over long periods of time at a very low price - most of it works, however while I love the price, practicality and lay out of of my well built (albeit second hand) QuakerMaid cabinets we installed, I am now trying to convince my dh to let me paint them. And while I really love my butcher block countertops in most of my kitchen, I really want Danby Marble in my baking area. We are somewhat stalled at the moment, and hope to be able to continue in a few weeks. Life is rich. I wish that I could show you a picture of the backsplash installed. I can't even show you a picture of the fronts of the tiles, as they are paper faced. Sorry. I purchased the Oceanside Veil Glass Tile on Craigslist (leftover from a job). FYI, is usually about $35 a square foot for that one inch tile blend. I paid a lot less. (Some of their more complicated patterns run upwards of $65 a square foot - it wouldn't surprise me if the Facets run close to $50, as the tile is hand crafted - the smaller the tile, the more tile that needs to be handled per square foot = an increase in cost.) One of the Asiatic species. Box need good drainage and may get root rot where drainage is not excellent, causing branches to discolor and die. There is also a blight or two that are seen fairly often in North American plantings. At least one that is making the rounds can be pretty serious.

i dont do boxwood .... so no comment specifically ...

just a few notes ... for your project ...

FIRST.. landscape fabric.. what a nightmare.. and what a waste ... remove it all ... it may be complicating how water moves to the root zone of your plants ... one second after fabric is laid down.. airborne weed seeds begin settling on it.. it does NOT repel weeds.. and is just a gardening nightmare ... thank god the prior owner did it .. lol

next... make sure you know where all your utilities are.. before you go digging close to the house .... . better safe than sorry ...

next ... if the plant fails to impress you.. why move and save them???? i would tend to get rid of things that dont please me ... food for thought.. i dont really care what your decision is ...

next ... plantings to hide the foundation .. SHOULD NOT BE PLANTED on the foundation .... those plants are at least 2 feet too close to the house ... ever touch a brick.. in sun.. on a hundred degree day ... the heat is amazing .... those plants are probably frying where they are now... and the brick retains the heat long into the night.. when the plant should be recovering ...

and finally ... stone is not really a mulch ... and removing stone is a nightmare.. good luck with that..

so .. you have these plants in full sun.. with fabric that interferes with water.. and probably retains soil heat.. planted too close to a brick oven which increases and retains heat long into the night .... cover by stones which do the same ...

and on top of that.. grass and weeds that are robbing whatever moisture is left ...

when put that way.. its not surprising how poorly they are doing ...

IF IT WERE ME .... remove the plants... remove the fabric.. remove the rocks ... increase the bed by about triple the width .. and then add 2 to 4 inches of mulch.. then dream up a landscape plan ...

hmmmm.. you up for it???? .. in my world.. this would be called.. my project for summer 2009 ... this is not a one weekend job .. short of a big checkbook .. or a bunch of burly men who work for food and beer .... no comment if all you have access to is burly women.. but they can and will get the job done.. and probably cost you less in beer ....
