Compassion works for me

I would suggest Pope john Paul. It gets rave reviews here. I love mine so much I bought a second. I don't have 2 of any other hybrid tea. It makes an great cut flower and last a long time.

Graham Thomas is not a long lasting cut flower.

Moondance is not nearly as good as PJP and blackspots w/o spray.

The Fairy is a low shrubby rose that grows in places where other roses won't grow. It is not a particular attractive rose - the roses are small and grow in a cluster. I don't think it has much of a fragrance. Frederick Mistral and Peter Mayle are good cut roses but they both get BS. You should look for any of Olga's posts on disease resistant roese. She knows her stuff and lives in MD.

Quietness is a Buck rose that has a HT looking flower and good disease resistance. Fragrance is moderate. If you like the old-fashioned look of English roses, the ones that do well as cut flowers for me are Sharifa Asma, William Shakespeare 2000, Crocus Rose, and Prospero.

Moondance is a very nice rose, but doesn't make a great cut flower because it doesn't last very long. I still use it as a cut flower though because it has so many rose blooms that I can go get a new one every few days when the old bloom fades. Other good fragrant cut roses for me are Marilyn Monroe, Falling in Love, Veteran's Honor, and Blue River. I spray, so I don't know if any of them are disease resistant but they all do fairly well in my garden.

I support Lori's recommendation of Quitness. I also suggest Earth Song. They both get some BS, but still survive and bloom. Another good one is McCartney Rose. Again, not disease free, but keeps vigor and blooms well. They all have excellent fragrance.

New Zealand has been a very good Hybrid Tea for me. It's very fragrant, and reblooms well.

Sheer Bliss is somewhat new to my garden, planted last spring. It's been a strong growing Hybrid Tea, lovely scent, doing very well this winter.

New Zeland was "the worst BS offender" for me of all roses I ever tried in MD (several hundred). Interesting how different our experiences can be in different areas.

I would try Firefighter....excellent vigor, incredible fragrance, looong stems, very good vase life.

To my nose The Fairy is completely scentless. I like it as a landscape item. It reblooms fairly dependably and its sprays of small baby pink roses would work very nicely in some flower arrangements. I grew it when I lived in the Philadelphia area and I don't recall that it suffered horribly from black spot (it got it, but it wasn't "devastated" by it the way some roses are), but to my nose it has zero scent.

I don't know how badly it would suffer from black spot in your area north of Baltimore (it might suffer quite badly), but Fragrant Cloud makes powerfully fragrant roses that will work as cut flowers. (HelpMeFind describes the flower color as coral-red. I wouldn't describe it that way because I don't think that conveys the amount of orange that can be present in the petals, but having said that, the color is challenging to describe. The petal undersides are dark coral pink. The upper sides of the petals are a mix of coral, red, and orange, with the orange and red fading as the blossom ages.)

As far as I can tell, a lot of people including myself) really dislike the color of Fragrant Cloud.... just a word of warning.

Olga, what about Star of the Nile? You have posted enthusiastically about it before and it's constantly on my mental list.

(True. The color is a strong one, a sort one is likely either to love or loathe without much middle ground. I grow it at the edge of a shaded area and it just pops out against the shaded background! It contrasts well with blue flowers.)

I still love SotN. II move toward no spray garden. This i is one of the roses that require spraying, but I still plan to keep it . Together with Lady Hillingdon Deuil de Dr Reynaud, Yolande de Aragon and one or two others that also require spraying, but are too good to be parted with. I love SotN so much. Fragrance, beauty, heavy bloom, just charm.

I think Fragrant Cloud is the most beautiful rose in the world (seriously). The problem for me is that the stems are always too weak for the enormous head of the flower.

Chrysler Imperial, Mister Lincoln are two red HT's. Evelyn is very fragrant yellow David Austin rose, that grows in singles and in clusters. Compte de Chambord is very fragrant, pale pink OGR (POrtland), that does not bloom often but is very very, fragrant. Rosa gallica officinallis and Autumn Damask are very fragrant, but r. gallica is a once-bloomer and Autumn Damask does not repeat too well - just a bit more over summer and in fall. UNfortunately, they all get blackspot for me - I sprayed heavily with lime sulfur in early Feb, so it may be less this year? Or wishful thinking? Baltimore is further north and less humid than near Washington, though. The Maryland Rose Society has a rose garden at Cylburn Arboretum in Baltimore, with peak spring bloom in late May, early June - they have many OGR's and Austin roses, plus HT's and minis. Perhaps check their roses out and see which smell best and look hearty. Good luck! Kathy
