Climbing rose for a no-spray garden?
Comments (32)Hello Darci, I do not use any sprays in my garden and have had wonderful spring through frost blooms from the beautiful climbing Noisette rose, MADAME ALFRED CARRIER. I grew her in my first home and when I moved into my recent home five years ago, she was my first rose purchase. We have had terribly humid summers here in NJ (just outside of NY City) and when my other roses, both old and English, were filled with black spot and their flowers were affected too, she stood up exceptionally well. This is a blessing for me, because I am one of those people who is head-over-heels in love with this rose. I would be happy to tell you which of the English roses have done best in my no spray, organic garden. My first home (20 yrs ago) had what I now call- my test garden. Then I had over 70 roses, now in my current home, I've kept it down to approx 13...I don't have the time anymore and wanted a smaller garden. But also, I learned from my test garden, which roses look just awful in July and August under extreme humidity and thus prefer not to grow those. When the humidity has been extreme Madame Alfred Carrier did show some black spot, but nothing as bad as the others and the flower itself wasn't affected. (A big plus). She is not thornless, but her thorns are not huge, thus this is something I never had to give any thought to. I have one photo of her that captures her subtle blush shades and her sensual nodding blooms. (I posted this image yesterday, Oct.19, in the GARDEN GALLERY under- ROSES I HAVE LOVED). I hope I attached that link correctly. (I don't know how to attach that image here??? can anyone help???) Her fragrance is also subtle, yet unforgetable. Everyone who experiences her scent gasps! Perfect near a bedroom window! it seems that those who grow her also fall in love! That Viking Queen looks real nice too! Best regards, Andrea Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreSay NO to Asko / Viking
Comments (24)I agree with everything Sleepyhollow said. I use Consumer Reports as an educational tool for non-appliance items. But for appliances, that magazine doesn't make a lot of sense. Also, CR's reliability results are skewed, since they obtain those numbers solely from customer surveys. Their customer base is not made up largely of Wolf/Bluestar/Miele, etc. users, so the survey results for those type of brands are going to be statistically skewed. As to the comment about "the brands our grandmothers used", I wish those brands were still around, still making items with the quality and longevity of those long-ago days. But the reality is that manufacturers today like Maytag (now owned by Whirlpool) and Frigidaire (owned by somebody, maybe Whirlpool too?), have extremely tight profit margins, very high operating and labor costs, and have to manufacture as cheaply as possible to compete with each other, and to compete with foreign companies like LG and Samsung who have lower operating and labor costs. That's not to say they don't make good appliances--I love my Kitchenaid fridge (made by Whirlpool). But don't think that the brands "of our grandmothers" which are also the ones CR favors, are generally better. The appliances they make need to be looked at individually, and keeping in mind what the individual wants to pay for which features. Meanwhile, the more expensive companies like Miele and Wolf charge a lot for their appliances, knowing that their customers will pay those higher amounts for (we hope) a higher-quality machine. Consequently, they should not so constrained by profit margins to cut corners. Even so, buyer beware also on the higher-end brands, as we have seen with this thread on Asko/Viking, and on Thermador (posted elsewhere). Even Wolf has had some problems with its 30" AG range (posted on this forum). So please, no blanket statements. Examine each appliance individually, and read this forum for a more accurate picture than a Consumer Reports would provide....See MoreRangetop and Wall Oven Selection
Comments (36)Thanks for the offer, alku05. We now are questioning the choice of the 30" F&P double wall ovens as my brother's 4 year old unit just had the top oven die this week. We really love the features and cooking ability of the F&P (two temparature probes, fantastic ergonomic touch and feel of the controls, 5 degree increment temperature setting, gorgeous blue interior, powerful broiler), but we want a bullet-proof unit that will last 40 years, not just 4 years. We like knob controls the best, instead of fingerprint-laden shiny black pushbutton controls. However, we are willing to trade knobs for buttons if it means getting a great, long-lasting, trouble free oven. Miele seems so popular on this forum. What about the GE Monogram Professional ovens with knobs? I'm searching the forums for reports on these ovens, but if anyone can post their experiences here, that would be great. I still love the look and feel of the Thermador Professional Deluxe double oven but am concerned about quality control, service hassles, and occasional slow heat-up problems, etc. that seem to plague Thermador. We would consider Wolf but have read about slow heating with those also. Too bad there is no Miele oven with knobs! We would appreciate any guidance here. Thanks!...See MoreFeedback on Viking Combi Steam oven?
Comments (7)I just got one of these, and it's a major disappointment. My first steam oven was made by V-Zug, a Swiss brand not available in the U.S.. I liked it so much that I got a countertop Miele model to go with it--sometimes it's nice to have more than one steam oven. When I moved back to the States, I got the ne plus ultra Gaggenau steam oven. The Gaggenau has been wonderful, but its not working just now, and it's taking forever to get it fixed--I live more than an hour's drive from the nearest Gaggenau service center. So I thought I'd get the Viking to use in the meantime, with the idea that later I'd have a second steam oven, and also (for the first time in years) a microwave. I don't miss much about microwave cooking, but I do miss popcorn. The Viking just isn't a real steam oven in the same sense as my Gaggenau, or any of the others I've used. For example, the "steam" function is limited to 35 minutes, apparently because its itty-bitty water tank won't hold enough water to steam for longer. But it takes 45 minutes to steam rice. Just now I ran it for 25 minutes, refilled the tank and emptied the drip tray, and then steamed for another 20 minutes. The rice still wasn't quite done. The machine does have an automatic "rice" setting, but apparently that uses the microwave feature, and I'm simply not ready to put up with microwaved rice. The Viking did make me some nice popcorn, and I suppose if you aren't used to something better the steam oven functions might be pretty appealing. But I'd advise a friend to suck up the extra cost and get a real steam oven. The new plumbed Mieles look good....See Morekathwhit
