seedlings do not grow steadily throughout their growth cycle - they grow in fits and starts (Like children).....and can often spend weeks in a minuscule state (lisianthus and browallia are dreadful for remaining minute seemingly forever) while others wait 2-3 weeks then romp away. In general, they will put on a growth spurt when transplanted (although again, they can stand still for a couple of weeks till they get over the transplant shock). Campanulas are also pretty notorious for staying titchy for weeks and weeks then bursting into growth. You have done the hard work (germinating them) so just sit back and let nature run it's course. As long as they are not actually yellowing, damping off, shrivelling, they will be fine - they have an innate growth speed determined by genetics as much as climate and conditions.....I have found that lights and heat have little significant difference in the time it takes for them to 'take off' and grow away......but grow away they will. 6-8 weeks is nothing - I have been waiting on some of mine since autumn, when they easily sprouted and have simply sat, for months, looking tiny (meconops, linum arboreum, eupatorium......while some are just emerging now (echies, primula wilsonii) but when they decide to put on a spurt, be ready for pricking out and potting on. Thinning, if thickly sown, is also a good idea.

I must say , years back when considering various palms to try indoors from a specialist palm nursery I'd order from in Florida, I was looking for some that would develope a nice trunk at a young age , but still not be too tall for my low ceilings at a young age, and I did sort of find a couple of those, though the "girths" aren't anywhere near what mature ones would have of course. On the other hand my Chinese fan palm only grew at the base for many years as the base increased in diamter over that time, til finally it started to show the "true" trunk with a diameter of six or eight inches, but still only perhaps eight to ten inches of true trunk below the crown shaft. I think many of the other plams tend to be "slow" in showing a trunk as well, though the crownshaft and of course the fronds are very lovely long before the trunks are formed!! The topic does remind me of the question, "Where does that crownshaft end technically , to become the trunk below? I think by definition the crowshaft for most varieties is the area extending from the lowest leaves on the trunk, to the top, but then of course those "lowest" leaves on some varieties that don't shed the old fronds naturally without some help, may extend all the way to the base of the palm , and I'm sure there's a true trunk under those dead fronds , if you get my meaning?? I see doing a little more research, the term "crownshaft" is used to apply to the way the leaf bases wrap around the trunk from the oldest fronds in the case of pinnate palms "only" I guess, so I'm not sure what the crown is called in the case of fan type palms or is that just plain "crown"?? Clearly there's a lot to be learned in the world of palms for me, when it just comes to understanding the specialized terms , when describing them in general!

Pick up the plant, open the door, and walk outside holding it. Now it's outside! Put it in a place where it will get some shade. I usually start plants outside on the front stoop which is on the north side of the house. After they've been there for a week or so, they can move to a sunnier spot. Don't worry about temperatures unless the forecast low is below 30°F. If it looks like it will get that cold, bring it back inside. Given the amount of moving I've done to plants over the years, I personally don't believe normal, non-ficus plants have any ability to be shocked by temperature changes. They can get sunburned, and they can get frozen by temperatures below their ability to handle. Anything else isn't a concern.

Jon Im in 6b and mine have been outside since the end of march. Looking back at the weather for Long Island it looks like you could have brought yours out early to mid May and been just fine. April had a few frosted nights but overall probably just fine for taking yours out during the day. Thats the other thing. if you have warm days during winter, fall or early spring say 60F+ you can get away with taking them out for awhile and then back in for the cold nights. I do this all the time. The sun could still burn them but since the angle is low its not as risky.
