Forsythia doesn't bloom
Comments (6)Hi: I also have had trouble with forsythia blooming and would love to know what my problem is. It is a Karl Sax variety - planted as a long hedge. I must admit to, for many years, probably pruning too late in the season, but lately I have pruned right after whatever blooms appear are done. Last year I pruned heavily and anticipated a fantastic bloom this year on all the new growth. Instead, I have virtually no flowers at all this year! Does anyone have any advice? I've had this hedge now for probably over 20 years and am about ready to rip it out. Thanks, Keith...See MoreMy Pink Forsythia needs a shrink....
Comments (5)Not as crazy as you may think :-) A lot of early flowering shrubs and trees can throw a few flowers in fall. Rhododendrons are common for this as are magnolias. I even see a few blossoms in late summer-early fall on our native dogwoods now and again. It is often triggered by cooler, wetter weather and shortening day lengths that occur in fall, especially after a warm and dry summer. These conditions fool the plant into thinking it is spring, as those are normal conditions for that time of year. Typically, this has little to no impact on the plant's ability to bloom as intended at its normal time of year. Just enjoy your late flowers as long as they are there!!...See MoreMy forsythia are blooming...
Comments (3)Oh how pretty! I think I might try crab apple next. The ice storm felled a lot of bradford pears as usual, and I've been capitalizing on the loss. I've never forced those before mostly because I fear the smell. But I decided to try them out just cause they were lying around. They take the longest to force I've found. It takes about 10 days for the buds to swell, but I cut them just in time as my forsythia blossoms are fading....See MoreWhy are there forsythia blooming?
Comments (3)I am in NJ (also Zone 7) and mine have been blooming for weeks now. We have been above normal for September, October and November. Foliage coloration was horrible this year. We went from green to frozen brown when it turned cold for a few days, then warm again, so now there are dead leaves on the trees that still won't fall off. Also, drought conditions are building again. My forsythia usually drops its leaves but I do still see a lot of green leaves on it....See MoreUser
