Growing from Seed

blue flax seed.

I direct sowed blue flax seed last spring and got sprouts but nothing else. Not too successful but I forgot about them anyway. Now I have tons of little seedlings coming up in that same area, in major masses and I have no idea what in the world it could be. They are not growing fast at all and I'm sure it is not grass. I'm just not sure what else it could be. Any ideas?

i've grown blue flax from seed, and had self-seeded babies. these don't look like them. the babies quickly have the same kind of leaves as the adult plants - more narrow than those. although, i don't know the scale of your photo. i just doubt they are blue flax. find a photo of the plant in a book or website, and see what you think, unless you already know it!

Thank you. I still have no idea what it is. Whatever it is doesn't seem to grow, only spread. It is easy to get out of the bed, all I have to do is move the mulch to the side and wipe my hands across the top soil surface and they wipe away. The have not grown taller at all but I'm finding them further away from the origional spot. I'm kind of puzzled by this.

At least online, just like all the others that have pink poppies. Swallowtail Garden Seeds does not have Linum lewisii. To give them the benefit of the doubt they may be calling it ''common flax''. Their pink poppies are in a mixture, not sold separately. Since pink poppies are fairly common and Linum lewisii is fairly common it is curious that it is difficult to find both.

Chopping off the plant while the stems are green and drying for a couple of months I find that not all the seed have fallen from the seedpods on their own but it is now easy to break up the seedpods by rolling a flower pot over them on a table. The germination test was good. I did not actually count how may seeds I used or what percentage germinated but it was good enough for armature gardening needs.
