my humble above-ground/in-ground pond as its built
Comments (5)it got to the point pictured below, and then the #%@$!& snow and artic cold came. It is still roughly as pictured below, although I did shape up the corners, remove some roots, and more or less level out the bottom since this was taken. If I was to take a pic of it now, it would be a white indention in the ground, surrounded by more white :-(...See MoreMy first pond, above-ground. Plants? (pics)
Comments (5)Very nice island sundog! Both hardy and tropical lilies and lotus love sun. You could also give it some height by adding something like umbrella palm, pickerel rush, thalia. You could do some floating-type plants like duckweed, azolla, parrots feather. You could also do some Louisiana iris. So many possibilities! Have fun!...See MoreAbove Ground Pond
Comments (4)No I didn't keep fish in them. I wanted a pebble pond so I can see the bottom and because blue herons and raccoons can steal the fish. To keep fish outdoors, you must have an inground pond at a depth below freezing level. This is so below the ice, the fish will be kept alive in winter. I would recommend something like 5 or 6 feet - depending on the kind of fish you wish to put in. Koi for example require a large deep and wide pond. It doesn't work for above ground ponds unless you take extra measures to ensure it's sides are well insulated as well. Also, predator animals like raccoon, birds can try to eat the fish so the deeper, the better for the fish....See MoreAbove ground pond covered for the winter
Comments (0)This is a picture of my above ground pond. The pond is covered by two tarps and the 100 gal stock tank with a spill way is also covered in the picture. The air temperature on the day this picture was taken was 10 degrees. I keep the 3600 ph pump running year round and the spill way never freezes. There is no ice what so ever on the pond under the tarps and we have had below 0 temps several time this winter. I rebuilt the pond last fall. My old above ground pond was a little smaller then this pond and was 14 years old and was made from railroad timbers. I built this new pond same location and used the same 100 gal stock tank spill way....See Moremckool
