Secret's Out vs. Sugar Moon, also White Gold
Comments (28)Late to this thread but I have six Sugar Moons planted in a row a few feet apart. I have Pope John Paul II in a different bed. I live in Iowa, where one day it is a crisp 75 and the next day is 85 and hot in the shower humid and perhaps the next day could feel like fall. My SM's are not as fragrant as my Pope John Paul II. The blooms are not as big either. In fact, some of the blooms just outright refused to open. I was diligent this year and sprayed once a week with neem oil on the Sugar Moons completely ignoring my Pope John Paul II, Golden Shower climber and the mini generic grocery store roses and my trashy hot pink knock out in different sections of the yard (you can't have too many rose bushes). White Sugar Moon roses are beautiful IMO - It is why I snagged them all up at the local nursery. This year is my first year planting them. Japanese beetles love them. The buds are tiny. Like three to four peas big. They have black spot, also have pulled all the yellow leaves off. I have babied these Sugar Moons. I water early morning every few days, sprayed weekly, snipped any faulty looking foliage. The Japanese Beetles flocked to my Sugar Moons front and center. I pick them off and throw them in a soapy bucket of Dawn dish soap. Next morning is the same with Japanese beetles and the Sugar Moons. When I check in the morning and the evening, all the other cheapie roses, trashy Menards knock out, Golden Shower climber and my Pope John Paul II are fine. Not a single beetle. I planted my SM's so I could sit in my favorite chair and look out to the garden from my fireplace room and enjoy them. The real MVP for us this year are the David Austins I planted in front of them (Queen of Sweden). I prefer white roses too but it is hard to turn away gifts and there's always room for another rose.... I wish our weather wasn't so wishy washy this year. I am being frustratingly patient with my Sugar Moons. All of the other roses are fine, no beetles, no black spot, no yellow fungus....See MoreFull Sail
Comments (17)Want some convincing? How about this: Full Sail wilts in heat - any heat. It wilts in Humidity. It wilts in the rain. It says to Black Spot - nay, CALLS to Black Spot, "Here I am!" For thrips, it's "Dinner time!" Anthracnose spots ruin the bloom's appeal. (Less so on apricot-colored roses, hence the appeal..... but that's another discussion.) Fragrance is... meh! Want more convincing? How about these. After about 2 hour of looking good in classic hybrid tea bud form, the bloom loses it's appeal as it opens further. If fact, it looks downright ugly even before the petals spread out. It's not a good cut flower, no matter what the "fact sheet" on it says. It wilts in a vase in less than a day. There's more, of course, but I don't want to beat you over the head too much....See MorePope John Paul II is dead, again and again
Comments (20)I tried PJPII own root many years ago. It didn't die, but just never grew. It was 2 ft X 2 ft at best and only gave me an occasional bloom when I finally got rid of it. I have it on Dr Huey now, and it's doing great for me. Rain, humidity nor heat seem to bother its blooms. I've had Sugar Moon for two years now, and Kathy is right, itâÂÂs already at least 8 ft tall. For the most part, only blooms on top of those tall canes; whereas, PJPII blooms all over for me. It's not as tolerant of rain, either. We had massive rain this spring, and most of SMâÂÂs blooms either balled or rotted without opening. The few that did open were ruined by the rain. It greatly improved once the rain slowed down and seemed to open okay in our high humidity. PJPII didnâÂÂt miss a beat pumping out big, beautiful blooms in all the rain. Both are stunning and very fragrant, but have different bloom forms. Sugar Moon's blooms are like huge camellia flowers. I donâÂÂt have any good individual bloom shots of SM (since IâÂÂm not 8 ft tallâ¦lol), but hereâÂÂs the best I haveâ¦itâÂÂs really much prettier in person: And here's PJPII being very rain tolerant:...See MorePope John Paul II
Comments (34)I love this rose! I got it last year and decided to plant it in a pot afraid of the cold hardiness. It performed beautiful all season long. Since you grow it in the grown in zone 4, I might planted outside next year....See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
