Lots of veg growers insist on saving their own seed, rather than buying new seed. It largely depends on what varieties you grew last year. If the seeds were F1 hybrids (a first-generation plant cross designed to give maximum vigour and with specific qualities), these don't come true from saved seed. You might have good plants or you might have ones that don't produce such good crops as last year's ones. If they are not F1 hybrids, then they'll probably produce crops that are just as good as last year. They might even be better.

Your experience of rapid near-100% germination from your own might give you a hint about how good (or bad!) store-bought seed is. I have stored seed for years and still get good germination, 100% from some three-year-old seed I sowed this spring. Often I get half, or very few, or even none, from a bought packet.

As to whether you get a good crop, that will be interesting. Almost every veggie seed on the market these days is a hybrid, developed for better yield, dwarf stature, early cropping, or disease resistance. Your own seed will not be the same unless you were maybe growing a deliberate heirloom variety. It would be even more interesting if you had a few seeds left over from last year so you could compare them side by side.

Thanks for the input. I'll rest easier now. As soon as my raised beds are built I can transplant and see how it goes. Along those lines, does anyone have any soil recommendations for raised beds for vegetables?
