Odd growth - what would you do? Pics.

I have two Knockout roses in a tough spot in my garden. Shaded by the house most of the day, until the west sun hits it in the afternoon - blazing hot. So, I threw these there thinking they might work, and if not, no emotional loss on my part.

Last April, I noticed this rose looked a little odd. Sorry for the bad pic. I really didn't give it much attention, and as far as I remember, everything seemed fine after this. I just happened to take a picture, just in case. This picture is from last April:

Then, as I was going around pruning the roses, I found this odd cane. I cut the entire cane off the rose. These next pictures are from yesterday:

It starts out normal (although thick), and flattens out. It's probably 2 or 3 inches wide where it flattens out. The entire cane is probably 3 ft. long.

I don't think I used round up in this area.

At first, I thought - too much fertilizer got to this root, or just not enough room for the cane to grow correctly, not enough light perhaps, and of course we all dread even thinking of RRD, and although it does look strange, I'm not sure it looks like the pictures of RRD I've pulled up on the internet. Could there be another cause for this type of behavior?

Should I be worried? I kinda am. I don't mine pulling this rose up immediately, but hate to have a knee-jerk reaction. On the other hand, I am not emotionally attached to this rose, and I am to my other 70+ roses in another bed just east of this area, so I don't want to "just wait and see" too long.

What would you do?

A ribbon-shaped stem (probably formed of multiple stems fusing together) is called fasciation. Branches off a fasciated stem will form abnormal patterns. It is just a birth defect that originated in the growth bud for that stem and not a symptom of Rosette disease.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Oh, I could just reach through this computer and hug you! I have been so depressed this morning, wondering what fate may come to my precious roses (not just this particular plant).

That makes sense, since it doesn't have the red growth that is usually present in the RRD pictures that I've seen, but it was so odd - I've never seen anything like it before.

Not that this matters to AuburnFan, who has made her decision, but I wanted to provide some info to think about in terms of Holly_BC's comments: The back of this cabinet is probably set into the frame using a dado joint--which means a groove was carved into the sides all the way around, and the backing piece was set into those grooves before the sides were glued at the corners (the bottom of most dresser drawers or kitchen drawers are constructed this way). It's a very professional and sturdy joining. But it also makes it harder to bang the back of the cabinet out. The grumpiness I felt is that--this *IS* a custom cabinet, and it would NOT have been that much more expensive to make it a triangular one. Or a slightly deeper one. It just would have taken some thought. (oh, and there was that matter of not having had my breakfast yet) It may be more attractive than a false door, but it was also more expensive. At least AuburnFan didn't actually pay extra cash, since it was "part of the package."

I would do as roseabbey suggested. That way you have the option of closing them on days you want the room dark. I don't like light in the room when I have a migrane, I'm sick, I want to sleep in, or when my GD wants to take a nap! Always think ahead of how you may want to use the room. If you're going to be able to close your drapes, then forget what I just wrote!

Look into something that blends with either the roof (greys and grey-greens) and accent with brick colors or blend with the bricks (red/browns). Is the siding a true white? The door is a black hole, isn't it? Anything but black would be an improvement. I would paint above the garage door something that blends with the bricks, even faux paint to match the bricks, to get rid of that odd bit of paneling. Then paint the actual door to match the shutters.

Thank you all.. and funny, I consider this a "newish" house. It is definitely newer than the majority of homes I've lived in. I am still getting used to the small space (and close neighbors) but it has charm :) I really appreciate your suggestion to use the "happy space" for my office. That is what I was thinking when I originally set up the office in there. Unfortunately, the small bedroom is not nearly big enough for my bedroom.. or bunk beds. It is an over the garage room and it has sharp angles that what can go on each wall. It has one longer wall that would accomodate my table/desk. I have a queen size bed without a headboard under one of the eaves now. Truth is an adult wouldn't likely be comfortable sleeping there under the wall... it is ok for the younger kids though. I usually give up my bed when the older kids sleep here. What I should probably share too (because I know it sounds odd that I am working around nieces and nephews). I moved back to my hometown so that I could spend more time with the kids, my parents and my grandparents. My oldest nephew goes to college this year-- and I've lived out of state for many years. I am very different than my siblings and I think it is important that kids are influenced by lots of kinds of people-- even my kind hahah. We watch movies.. and draw.. and paint.. and talk about silly things and serious things.. and it is good for all of us. Keeps me young and them well rounded. I feel good about helping to shape young lives. Thank you all for your thoughts.. and for the compliments. My home is so much more modest than many of yours but it does have its charms... and it's home!

I'm watching several mass plantings of Knockout and the plants with RRD don't have fasciation.

Thank you for showing the blooms at the end of the cane; when I've had roses with fasciation, they didn't manage a bloom. (When I cut the fasciated cane off, that bush never produced another fasciated cane, FWIW.)

It didn't look like the RRD pictures I've seen, but I have to admit, I was so very worried. I just don't know how people can live through an outbreak of RRD in their gardens. Just this odd growth was so emotionally draining on me.

I'm so thankful I decided to ask the experts here. I learned something new, and if I ever see fasciation again, I'll recognize it.

We just had another thread on the Antiques forum about fasciation. It's doesn't happen a lot but it's definitely not unheard of or cause for concern about the plant. It's just another kind of genetic mutation like a sport or a vegetative center. And some roses are more prone to those kinds of genetic mishaps than others.
